What do you do with your Costumes?

I was just wondering what everyone does with their costumes other than Halloween and movie premieres. I know some people are able to go in and visit children's hospitals and schools and I was wondering how I can get into that.

I remember when I was in 6th grade some guy showed up to our school dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow, and he looked exactly like Johnny Depp (as far as my 11 year old mind could tell) It was the coolest day ever. This was around the time when the first Pirates movie came out.

How do people do that? Are they invited by the school through local ads or do they seek out places and offer their services?

I plan on entering carnivals and raising money for charity, conventions, party's etc

Qualitystreetz- they don't make them like they used too.

Currently it sits like this....

I plan on using mine for Cons and children's hospitals. Just contact the staff and when they have "community days" or the like they usually don't have a problem with people volunteering their time.

One costume (Fallout Power Armor) is on display in the living room, I'll add more as soon as I get my hands on more mannequins.

I wear my costumes as often as possible, main focus on carnival, but also on halloween, at theme parties I'm hosting on a quite regular base (like 3 times per year).

Finally my girlfriend and me "make up" occassions to wear costumes, e.g. there was is an annual classic music event in my hometown situated at the city's park and they host a contest for the nicest picnic arrangement (most guests bring a table or a blanket and food to the event). While this contest never was meant to be connected to costumes we thought that having an Alice in Wonderland style tea table would be a great idea, so we went as Alice (my girlfriend), Mad Hatter (me) plus the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit and had lots of props and decorations with us. Actually, we won the contest! :) (Pictures here if you're interested!).

Oh, and coming dressed up to a "normal" party is a funny / weird experience as well! ("Huh, weren't we supposed to be costumed tonight?" :lol)

Fortunately here in Oklahoma we have multiple costume clubs that do charity appearances. Seek out your local 501st Legion group, see if they have an upcoming event that is open costume or ask them if they know of a costume club in your area.

If you have superhero costumes, organizations like the Heroes Alliance and the Avengers Alliance have branches in many states, and organize charity appearances.

normally i sell my stuffs when i don't need them anymore or i'm in need of money, just like my mark 42, sometimes i join local charity events, house parties and birthday parties,

but if there's no one to buy my stuff yet and there's no on-going conventions or events near me. . .well. . .

Depending on the type of costume there are often costuming clubs/organizations like for Star Wars costumes there is the 501st.
The 501st organisation have a website where people can request appearances etc and they organize the troops required etc via a forum.
Over here we locally also have a general costuming group "the melbourne costume group" who cater for just about any and every costume you care to imagine and they, like the 501st have a forum, facebook page etc that they use to organize events.
Maybe try doing a internet search for a costuming group in your area ? .... If you don't find one start one ! lol
Cheers,
J

Mine wind up in a pile in the garage. Though I have a dummy and always try to have a costume "on display" in the garage.

I'd really like to build some more dummies do I could display all my costumes but finding the time is so tough.

Doing the hospital thing sounds super rewarding I'd love to try that out sometime.
