Weathering

Does anyone have any tips or tricks on weathering your costume. Going as cpt. Jack sparrow for Halloween. I'd be great for fellow sparrow costumers to share there techniques. But anyone can share how they weather there costumes.

I've always found Fuller's earth to be great for dust effects. I've used charcoal powder with good results too.
I know Ben Nye do plains dust and coal mine dust, but for the price and the amount you get I find my first two recommendations more value for money and repeat applications.
I think that less is more where weathering is concerned. Unless you have very good reference pics of the weathering your attempting then it requires some thought as to how a garment would weather.

I would imagine for Captn Jack the main sources of weathering would be sweat (yellowing effect), salt water and sunlight (has a bleaching effect), mildew(green effect), wet sand(light brown effect) and...... well rum (dark brown, you could use tea here) I suppose.
Now it's just a matter of recreating those sorts of effects and staining.

Rather than repeating everything all over again for the 9,000.350.678.254.786 time...head on over to Keep To The Code.com and you will find all your tips for weather Captain Jack Sparrow!

In short though:

1. Shirt and sash - Soak in tea bath. Run the sash through the washer multiple times to get fraying.
2. Breeches and waistcoat - Very dilute bleach and a sponge to achieve the faded look. Follow it up with coffee grounds or tea to get the stained look.
3. Boots - Shoe polish on the outside of the leather.
4. Bandana - POTC 1 look is much redder than POTC 2/3. Fade with very dilute bleach. Use a little gray/black and dip the bandana to get the red less vibrant.
