Water proof necklace HELP NEEDED

My greenhorn-ness knows no bounds and still surprises me. I had the idea of making a necklace based on the piece of the heart from Legend of Zelda, but I haven't a clue where to start, how to do it, what to use, ect. I would very much like opinions and feel back on how to do this. I was hoping to give it the same gem like look and feel as one would expect from the gem heart and I had planned on making it have depth to the heart like a real stone. Any ideas...?

This is just a thougth but what if you casted the red inner hart in just plain old resin colored red in the shape of a hart.
then you place the red resin hart in the midle of a mold in the shape of the peace you whant to make and then por in som semi translucient gren (or what the collor is on it) and when it has hardened you just shape it like a dimond by filing or anny means preferd.
the edges can be done just simply by folding copper or bras around the whole peace (or just go nuts and use real gold XD).
this is just my thougth and how i probabely would have done it, hope it helps!
