Was Mal's Firefly and/or Serenity pistol metal?

Anyone know if Mal's pistol from Firefly and/or Serenity was metal and had any moving parts? Is anyone out there making a metal pistol? I would like to know because QMX is coming out with the replica from Serenity soon but it's resin with no moving parts and if there might be an accurate version from either the series or movie made of metal available sometime this year I would wait for that. Thanks.

The original prop was a Taurus revolver inside a cast/machined, multi-part brass shell. So, short answer - yes, it was metal. Check the Firefly companion for a nice history of the prop.

The pistol used in Serenity was the same prop, with an altered faux-clip and some greeblies added to the right side, as I understand it.

The QMx Serenity pistol is supposed to be resin, but brass plated. It should have a metal "feel" and weight, and I, for one, can't wait to see what it finally looks like.

The Serenity pistol was actually a new gun because they found it cheaper to make a new one than pay the price the old guys were going to charge.

That is untrue. The Serenity gun were the guns used in Firefly but with additional greeblies and the modified magazine.

Hey, don't laugh - I'd heard the same thing from a bunch of different people. :$ But t'was untrue, as the Firefly gun was modified for Serenity - done mainly with the intent of making the prop less "rickety" when being fired.

So it was was a working pistol even able to be fired.[/b]
Yes, it was able to fire. I'm not 100% sure that it could fire bullets, but it was seen in the TV series firing (assuming blanks) with smoke coming out of the barrel after each shot.

I ran across photos of two Serenity production photos below and snagged them. The first photo shows a spur hammer uncocked and the second photo shows the hammer ****** with the safety lever up, did the Serenity pistol have this spur hammer in the movie? If it had the spur hammer then the QMX replica shown at the bottom isn't accurate.

Definitely no hammer. In fact, I believe the advertising image being used by QMX is actually a photo of the screen-used prop. To date, I have not seen a single photo of a finished QMx replica. Presumably that will change once the guns are in production...

Apparently QMX has given an "artist's proof" of the gun to some folks to be used as the prize in a Firefly-related contest - that seems to imply that they're getting near the goal. Unless it's more of a theoretical prize, to be given once it's finally created...

The spur hammer looks good but also looks like it would be hard to cock. The QMX website says Revised Product Images Coming Soon and that the replica will ship in the first quarter of 2007, they better hurry.

So any word if anyone is making a metal replica or kit?

I've ordered a QMx, which I think will make a great addition to my FF collection. If precedent (i.e. "SD") tells us anything, the product will be quite good. :D

I wouldn't put much stock in QmX's site. They have been promising revised product images since it launched, and we have nada. I'm beginning to wonder if the whole thing's not etherware.

As for a metal version, see This Threadfor a metal version of the Firefly (not Serenity) pistol. It's beautiful, but it'll cost ya.

Rather, it would cost ya if there was one for sale, but I'm afraid I may have to settle for just looking at these amazing one-off metal Mals.

Contact ****, they were for sale. Quite a reasonable price, but unfortunately way out of my range.

EDIT: Removed by request. LG

Wow, the metal replica is perfect. Hope the QMX looks as good.

Yeah, thanks, moffeaton. I mean, ***** ******, it was the most hilarious error ever made on these forums.
