Wanted: Review of MR Rocketeer Helmet.

I've seen comments here and there about how good/bad/accurate/inaccurate
the Master Replicas Rocketeer helmet is.

Before I make the plunge, could one (or more) of the dedicated finheads give
me some insights into this helmet?

Point out the flaws or good things about it; comparisons between it, the film
used helmet and/or the other versions available. Or just point me in the right
direction for such information if you could. :)

Thanks in advance,

Russ

Well I own both the MR and ACME (MIM) kit.

Here's my ACME one sorta cleaned up and my MR RIGHT out of the box, no Mods yet.

I haven't finished my ACME one yet, but after getting BUMPED and run into at SD Comic-Con I'm glad I didn't! The fin would have been snapped off at least 3 times from idiot people messing with it. The ACME one is as accurate as you're gonna get without owning a real screen used helmet. It has the proper wide "cheeks" that the MR lacks.

The MR is brass... that's a BIG neat factor and people were in awe of it. I was able to do the small stretch mod to the sides to get a little wider look. Due to the pushed in cheeks most people can not put the helmet on without ripping off their ears, lol. It's a tight fit. It also is fully lined and has some padding, I added a little more so it wouldn't wobble.

I also darkened the lenses on mine, installed some mesh on the inside of the mouth as well as dyed the chin strap.

As long as you take pictures of a side view and not a straight on view, I think the MR is a perfect helmet to wear at Cons, mainly due to the cool factor of being real brass and strength from Con goobs. The only people who will notice will be fellow finheads that will probably know why you're wearing that vs the ACME one or anal fan-boy costume nazis, but who cares about them.

also own the brass mr
love it it is near indestrucatble
i got mine for 100 bucks at mrl in the scratch and dent section
replace the lenses with shade 5 visor and you are gold
the downside is the heat and the weight
i wore my getup at d-con the year after we lost dave and could not go 5 feet without being mobbed for pics and boy was i hot and miserable by the time i got to the bar.
cant speak to the acme cept to say it looks pretty!

It may be a moot point at this time if you want the MIM helmet. MIM has taken down all or allmost all lifesize unliscensed replicas from their website in respect to studios and liscenseers requests to do so. The MR helmet does have a few screen used innacuracies. The MIM helmet is far more accurate. It was molded off of one of the replica helmets that I produced back in the mid 90's. My mold came from a copy of Jim Latta's stunt helmet and a copy of mine was later used for molding for Icons prototypes for Disney. My copies here made of fiberglass and far superior to the hollowcast resin ACME kit that MIM sold. Thanks, Jeff

I THINK the MR helmet is based from your helmet, one of my good friends at HMS did the paint on the prototype MR used for promotional materials and she told me it was fiberglass. I'm wondering if it was shipped off to India for the brass makers to copy from.

I own an original Rocketeer helmet (not used on film) which I had to have severely restore because it was in terrible shape when I obtained it. I also own the MR version because the all-metal construction is just too cool to NOT have!
I love the MR helmet - the smooshed in cheeks sucks at first, but as long as you don't sit it next to a more authentic replica, you really don't notice it after a while.

The thing I don't get about that message board is that nobody is ever on it. I've asked a few places where to go for rocketeer discussion, and they all point me there. Nobody has really posted there in a few years...:confused

I've been trying to get all the broken links/pictures back up. Every time I start working on it, the board tends to go real quiet. BUT we've had a couple new people sign up and started posting so I'm gonna get off my butt and finish rebuilding it.

I may just go ahead and sign up there also.
I will (at some point) be starting my costume.:cool
