W.I.P. Ultimate Captain America

Hi guys,
So I'm currently working on building an Ultimate version Captain America. I'm basing my costume off of two different designs for their colors, appearance and adding a little custom work.

Apart from having several orders placed and just waiting for that stuff to arrive, I've started some basic and easy pieces like the Belt w/ Pouches and the Boots. Once more pieces arrive, I'll begin putting more and more together until finally being a complete costume :)

So what designs of Ultimate Cap am I basing my costume off? Here are a few reference pics...

Basic costume design I'll be attempting:

I'll be going mostly for this set up here, but with a few alterations and customizations. I'll be using different gloves, a darker blue and a different red on the gloves and boots (see 2nd pic). The cowl will not be attached to the vest, in order to be used with both latex cowl and helmet. The A will also be a custom version. And finally the scales.. that's yet to be determine how I'll attempt those.

Extras: Cowl separation from the vest, custom gloves design, dark blue color of the vest, cowl and pants. And the brick/burgundy color mix on the gloves and boots. There will also be grey under the arms, not blue:

BOOTS -
Still unsure if I'll add a pouch to each. But they are done.

BELT -
I wanted to bring out a little of Golden Age Cap in my costume, so I went with authentic WWII pouches on the belt.

From "The Ultimates" comic book

Top -
Here is the top of the torso so far. It's a 2 piece. The underarmor white shirt has the red ab stripes added, and I also put on grey elbow pads to match the first reference pic. The over shirt/vest is for now just temporary. Over time I would like to get a custom scaled piece done. And yes, I know the blue is pretty dark, but I meant for it to be that way. Maybe not THAT dark, but dark. It brings a more realistic non-cartoony look to the costume in my opinion, and that's what I'm shooting for.

SHIELD -
Captain America's Mighty Shield! More like a pain in my rear-end, lol. I got a little frustrated due to the elements of nature and a few suicidal bugs, but besides that it went OK. Just very time consuming. I got it done in one day, so I can't complain.

*Progress pics from start to finish on page 3 of this thread*

I used IrishAmericanLad's D.I.Y. Shield Tutorial and managed to get this done only with asking pointers over emails from Daryl. All in all I'm satisfied with it, and for a first time job like this, I can't complain.

Reference (I do plan to do another clean version, so my first I just finished with probably end up with battle-damage and wear) photo

Finished Shield #2 - Back of the shield with handle and backpack system. Rough paint job, didn't want to go all out since it is the back of course.

love the boots, and love Captain America. looking forward to your progress!

Thanks for the compliments :) Yeah, I have some white laces coming in the mail that I'll be dying a scarlet red.

No, they aren't Dr. Marten's. They are Demonia, a cheaper boot that you can get at Hot Topic for a fairly decent price. After searching all over, I finally came upon these for a very good price and there was a discount coupon with them, so it worked for me. They are actually a lot better boots than you would think. All I did was paint (after practicing several coats and shades) using a mixture of Angelus Brick and Burgundy leather paints and attach two and a half yards of trimmed leather, wallah! I'm very pleased with the outcome.

So the debate continues... to add or not to add the pouches...

looking good. according to your pics, no pouches.
stick with that.

plz ditch that statue as a photo reference. that artist (madeira? guinness?) is horrible and his disfigured art might throw off measurements if you're doing any sort of scaling, also he looks like buzz lightyear captain america. i would recommend pictures from the first couple trades from the ultimates if you havent already.

Yes, I have quite a few reference pics from The Ultimates that I'm using as well. The only things i'm using from the Bowen Statue is the Gloves. That's really about it. It's a toss up between the color of the Gloves and Boots, too. Since the UA2 is very similar.

I actually like the stylized statue. The costume design on it is very cool too. (Not all comic art has to be photo-realistic. In fact most isn't, which is why translating comics to live-action is often difficult.)

But anyways, nice looking boots. I thought they were docs too.

Nice boots!
Why don't you use leather laces? that way you can match 'em to the colour of the boots easily.

Just worried they will be too shiny.

As for the statue, yeah it's a little on the Hulk side. But I'm not referring to the body, just the gloves and colors :)

awesome. i have been thinking about this..

you could get a upper body muscle suit to give you those crazy thick arms, shoulders and chest like the second statue. if i did one i would have to have the muscle suit.

I'm going to do that, but not THAT big, lol.
