Voltron Costume

Hey everyone I am knew to the forum and this is my first post. However I am not new to costuming. I have been in the 501st since 2007 and made my share of costumes. I feel it is time to step out of the comfort zone and why not make a Voltron costume always wanted one as a kid. I will post pictures as I can of the progress. I am in no rush to get it done however I would like to have it completed by August 2013 for Wizard World in Chicago. The 2 head I am working on right now is the Red and Green Lion. I plan to make templates out of FoarmBoard since it is cheap and once I know the pieces will go together okay I will then transfer it over to EVA Foam 1/4". Any pointers or anything anyone can offer during my project I am all ears. I am building this from scratch with no templates using reference pictures and my measurements. I it is a pleasure to be out here with all of you and looking forward to your feedback. Thank you

They look awesome mate, especially for freehand work, well done! This will be amazing when finished :D

This is an awesome idea. I was always a big fan of Voltron, even had the toys as a youngster.

The progress looks impressive. One thing I do remember (from the toys at least) was that the only identical lions were the Red & Green. The Blue and Yellow had slightly different heads (one being female of course).

Technically. The red lion is more boxy whereas the green little has a more circular shape to it.

Good luck on your build, the best Voltron costume I've seen so far is the one that belongs to some little girl. She has pics of it all over the Internet.

Nothing like bringing a classic to life. I would have killed for a costume like that when I was little. I will be following this one closely. Good luck!!

actually the red and green lion are different the green loin's body is made up of tubes while the red lions body is made from boxes

Wow! Ive always loved Voltron as a kid. Cant wait to see what you come up with. So far looks amazing!

I'd have to agree. Voltron was a few years before my time but luckily I have older brothers who made me watch the old awesome cartoons. Can't wait to see this thing finished.

I agree dude i was a fanatic over these 5 lions and i still have my diecast metal version after 25 years. Here's a pic of that girl. Good job! hope It comes out great!.... thumbsup

Ha,ha! It is funny how the best Voltron cosplay I have ever seen is played by a little kid.
The kid's Voltron has a lot going for it in mobility , and visually.
If she had a helmet it would make the proportions of the everything go way off. Then you would have a Chibi/S.D. Voltron.

I have to mention that a dummy would be the best way to work on this. Then you would have a better idea of how it will fit/ look when it is built.

Here is a link that may help you.

Thank you for all the feedback. Finally able to work on the costume some more. I am currently working on the second section of the red and green lion. I did go ahead and tear apart one of the heads and start the process of transfering it to foam.

I also started working on the template for the sword. The last picture is the sword

What would be a good sealer for the foam to take paint? Will modge podge work?

Actually, Green Lions sides of the mouth were rounded, not octangonal
like red lion. I'm talking about the side openings on the top and bottom
jaws. You have them both octagonal in shape.

Every lions head was slightly different from one another.

Looking great so far though. I'll be watching this thread for sure!

Modge podge should work as a sealer.
Do you plan on standing on the lion heads? Or are you going to use the lion heads as shoes?

Thank you for letting me know about the circular mouth on green lion. I did not notice that. I still have time to update that feature as I have not transfered my green lion template to foam yet. I plan on using the yellow and blue lions as shoes.
