Ran across this the other day, a photo from 1978:
I was a Midshipman 2/c (junior) at the Naval Academy when I posed for this photo in February 1978. My scratch-built Vader costume was built around one of the first Don Post helmets. The chest piece and armour panels were made from cardboard, balsa wood and thumbtacks. The guy strangling me is Captain Wood, USMC, who in 1975 had led the boarding party that reclaimed the SS Mayaguez from the Khmer Rouge. He was a Marine's Marine and therefore worthy of besting the Dark Lord at his own game. This photo made the cover of the Academy's humour magazine, The Log.
Somewhere in my photos is a picture of me in the Vader costume, sitting in the cockpit of a F-14 Tomcat aboard the USS John F. Kennedy. If I find it, I will post it.
How many other vintage costume builds can be show these young'uns?
