Velociraptor Claw from Jurassic Park

One of my earlier props that I made was this raptor claw. I was going to a MC Chris concert and he was having a costume contest. I decided to go as Dr Allan Grant from Jurassic park. I actually won the contest too. The costume was easy, but I wanted the velociraptor claw to go with it. In the movie there is a great scene where he scares the kids. I figured I would post what I did to make it.

I started out very lucky actually. Someone that works at a meuseam had scanned a real fossil and posted it to Thingiverse.

It is obviously much smaller than the one in the movie, but I already knew that the movie was using the velociraptor name to describe another raptor that was larger. Sometimes called the Utah raptor. Its an interesting read if you wanna google it. So I did a little reading to find out how big the raptors were and then scaled the 3d model up to match. Then I 3d printed 2 copies. One that was the full claw and the other that was only half.

Then I made a mold box from some old plastic. I put a bit of extra work into the mold box because I wanted to be able to reuse it for other small parts. Then super glued the half claw to some acrylic sheet and bolted that to my mold box. Poured in silicone and made the first half of the mold. I then removed the half claw and replaced it with a full claw and poured the second half of my mold box. All in all it turned out exactly as I planned.

Let me know what you all think.

Nice work! A little bit of smoothing on the print lines (can't tell if you did in the final photo, looks a bit blurry) and thats a pretty decent fossil replica!
