There's a lot to like here and you've done some great legwork. I keep coming back to this. Feels like one or two things should be compartmentalized to add interest, fill a little space and perhaps imply a hierarchy of importance. Artists choice on what items those might be. That said, I many have a biased eye wanting it to look a little like a gun case, or gamblers case, which it is not.

This is super cool! I think I used the same sase for a pirate box a while back, it's a great look!
Maybe carve some bible verses into the stakes and cross? Something intricate and cool like the Gutenburg illustrations, would look awesome as a wood burn or something.
I almost want to see some old documents, or a notebook, or a map tucked away in there somewhere.
