Value of a prop???

Dear RPF membership,

I have a friend who claims that he has an original non hero Han Solo blaster used in the cantina scene with Greedo. :confused The piece is displayed on a plaque with Lucas's signature underneath. The backstory is that the man's uncle was a Time magazine writer/reporter and did a story on Star Wars and Lucas offered this to him when the story was finished. He says it has been kept out of the sun and sealed in the case since 1977. I was curious, if the backstory is substantiated and true and it has the Lucas signature, what would be the value of the piece. I'll work on trying to get some pictures. Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Movado

Careful you must be.
I would be more than slightly suspicious.Unless the provenance was concrete laid in steel i would avoid this.

Either your friend is lying or seriously misinformed. The odds that it is just now coming to the surface are astronomical.

IF you can prove the story, it would have a very high value (see the recent Christie's auction of Star Trek props for an example - this would be higher then most of those, I would guess.)

However, it is doubtful. Something like this Lucas would probably remember so it shouldn't be too hard to verify if this person wants to insure it or sell it.
Hopefully, it's true and you can get a bunch of great pics and drop it in silicon for us! :D

There are people out there that would pay ridiculous sums for a prop like this, as mentioned above I highly doubt this is original. There is an alarming number of fakes out there....

Profiles In History Breaks $2 Million
Auctions/Prices, Scoop, Friday, August 05, 2005

The general media is amazed that the light saber used by Like Skywalker in the original Star Wars movie sold for $200,600 during the recent Profiles in History auction. Every major news source reported on the sale and seemed surprised. However, Scoop readers know that sale is just a reflection of how healthy the collector's market is over all. Every one of us sees amazing auctions and items every week. There has never been a better time to be a collector than right now.

Profile in History did an amazing job of handling over 550 lots while under the spotlight of media scrutiny. Several of the items they were offering greatly exceed the expected value. In what may be the best example, the Lightsaber used by Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back sold for $118,000. The pre-auction value was set at $40,000 to $60,000.

Other Hollywood items went for top dollar. The leather jacket worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator sold for $41,000 and the complete costume worn by Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan brought $29,500.

Thanks folks. I'm not into purchasing this item nor is he willing to part with it. I was simply feeling out the value. I am going to try to get some pictures of this item in the near future. With those, perhaps we/you can better determine what we've got here. I am suspicious of this myself that is why I came to the greatest source of prop knowledge in the galaxy. When I found Yoda dead, I came here next! :lol

News or updates...?

The hero gun (made from a real gun) sold for $180,000 in June... If it's proved to be real, a non-hero would be worth, what? Half that maybe?
