Vader helmet paint question.

Great work Kraig. I love the paint job on your helmet. Seeing those pics just reinforces my views on the GH ANH as being the best looking ANH lid available. Great stuff.

:eek (you won't see me use this smilie that often)

Holy cow, Kraig.....my jaw almost dropped to the floor when I saw those photos of your GH helmet/armor in front of a brick wall like the Kermit pics....even the lighting is the same....job well done. Man...maybe I'll send you a couple of helmets to paint for me? ;)

Looks really good Yakam.

About an hour ago I tested out this on a Rubies. I don't think it came out that bad. I was "method painting". :lol I figure the original helmet must have been a rush job, so I did this on my lap and only gave myself about 4 minutes.

I just thought I'd take a pic of him suited up. Please don't laugh at the inaccuracies of his suit and sundry, he was pretty good when I first did him a few years ago, although I'm about to start the process of upgrading him.....

Wow we have some Zen masters of brush painting here. Nice work. I had to look at the silver plastic inlaid nose to make sure it was really a Rubies you had there ;)

Thank you. It is just a cheap-o touch-up paint from Kragen. NG GM 396 GUNMETAL MET. Iused the horrible brush that's inside. I think going over the clear coat also made some kind of difference. I'm suprised also at how different it looks in natural light.

Notice how the silver nose looks the same color as the applied gunmetal color in the first picture, but is more silvery in the second, natural-light picture... which means that lighting has a lot to say about how different shades of metallic grey and silver looks on pictures - this, regarding the theory that the ANH nose was the same as the gunmetal color. May be true... may not be true... definitely deserves more scrutiny. :)

That's an excellent observation. I'm going to check into this and see what I can come up with.

WOW...,

Thanks for all of your comments on him, there's some VERY flattering ones too :$ thanks so much.

PnatheraGem, that looks excellent are you going to continue doing the whole face?

Thomas, your reaction floored me, thank you :) When I wanted to do the pics, I was racking my mind thinking about a backdrop. Then it occured to me that the Kermit pics have become well known and he's got a brick wall behind him... perfect.

The dome is still too dull, I did a light polish on it, but I'll repaint it I think. The nose is the same colour gunmetal, I think that it's the way they did it for sure.

Anyway, a huge thanks goes to GH too, you're a legend mate :D

Thanks again folks :)

Cheers,

Kraig

Thank you Kraig. Your full Vader looks excellent.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm just noodling. I'm really just doing it to see what kind of results I get.
I'm planning on going this route to finish a casting sometime in the future.

Absolutely love the look, its perfect.

Thanks Man, I'm looking forward to upgrading the mannequin to match the helmet and armour.

PnatheraGem, with what you've shown, I very much look forward to seeing one completed by you. Excellent work :)

Cheers,

Kraig

Sorry for the horrible picture quality, but I had to use my camera phone as I've loaned out my Minolta. Anyway, thought you guys might be interested to see what it looks like right now. I've just been doing a little everyday. I doubt I will totally finish the Rubies, but I want to get it good enough to where you can see what happens when the light hits it at different angles. I must say, with what I've done so far, some parts of the gunmetal definitely plays tricks on your eyes.

I thought it would be cool to show this because it looks like I've been scraping off black paint with a wire brush to reveal a metal underneath. Not painting on cheap gunmetal touch up paint....

Ok, still don't have my camera back, so these crappy ones will have to do for now. I'm glad I have a Rubies to test on. Some parts were sanded off then re-done. If you look at these next to production photos, I think the effect works pretty good. I'm just to lazy to post any at similar angles. :D

Kraig, I wish you still lived in Napier. (Not that I do anymore.) Then I could come over and see your Vader (or steal 'im. :p).

Just awesome.
