Vader ANH belt box mesh - what is it? Or what's closest?

As there has been much DV ANH belt box discussion lately, I suppose the next natural question for those of us working on accurate ANH belts is the belt box mesh.

Has it ever been positively ID'd? If not, what material or size of mesh comes closest to what is seen onscreen in ANH?

I seem to recall reading something about it being a 70's fluorescent light covering (the plastic cover stuff) cut up and sprayed silver...or did I imagine that? :confused

I remember reading/hearing that it was the mesh from the front of an old tape recorder....maybe off the speaker grill or something?

Definitely interested here too. I know JRX used the tape recorder mesh on his, which looks great.

I have looked around forever for the correct screen, with so many members doing ANH Vaders something has to come up.

... I'm not sure Gundam, it looks as though the perforations on the ANH mesh are arranged in rows and columns all in line with each other, rather than the 'brickwork' pattern of the mesh on that tape machine.

    HOWEVER.

You might just have taken a giant leap closer to finding the very ellusive metal mesh used on Vader's neckbrace under all the greeblies.. (Also seen as the inner lining of Luke's robotic wrist at the end of ESB).

Maybe you could start a new thread with some nice close ups of that Roberts mesh and see what other Vader Reveal guys think? Looks VERY close to me. You'd need a larger section of mesh for a Vader neckbrace though so it probably didn't come directly from one of these machines, but there may be a common source.

That looks pretty * close. Even the number of rows and columns looks close.

I'm looking forward to getting some on my Vader too.

I know most of you have probably already done or tried this, but I thought some may not have. I took the best pic I had of his box and messed with it to make a small sheet of mesh.....

Just right click and save, I hope it's the right size.

I stuck it in with tape.......

It's not prefect, but it's better than the flyscreen stuff I had in there. Please pay no attention to the green lights, I ordered a couple of sets a couple of months ago and they went missing, I've ordered another set from another supplier, I hope those turn up. :confused

    Cheers,

    Kraig

    Thanks :)

I thought I'd post the pic to share if anyone wants it, it looks bigger on the screen because it's 150dpi but it should print out the right size to put into ANH boxes. I did it so that there's plenty of overlap too.
I was thinking about getting someone to make me some out of aluminium using a water jet, but I thought against it as It would just look like a flat sheet with holes in it, not rounded mesh.

    Cheers,

    Kraig

Very interesting thread indeed, I'm based in the UK and will also check out what old items I can find over hear that may hold some clues to this original mesh.

Great work guys. Lets nail this :)

I think we seem to be heading in the right direction.

I just checked out my old Fender amp and sure enough, the pattern of the speaker grill had a familiar look to it:

Not exact, unfortunately. The size of the grill is too large.

Sutely though, it's only a matter of time before the correct grill/mesh is found.

    Nice work mate.

Those look pretty good. I wonder how the sizes line up with the screen used mesh?

What are the dimensions for the cut-out (on the box) where the mesh goes?

    ~Russ

EDIT: Nevermind, I have Frett's RR boxes to work with now. :)

I've also begun asking companies to create the mesh. I've inquired with 10 in all and 2 have said they cannot do it.

To me, when looking at the pictures, the mesh or grid doesn't look woven like those wire mesh examples, but looks like a solid piece with the grid pattern cut out of it - as if cast or cut, not interwoven. If you know what I mean.

B&Q in the UK have a vast amount of different mesh.

Its used as fire guard mesh.

Might be worth looking at those for the desired shape or weave?
