URGENT HELP!!!! Need FROG SUIT/WET SUIT

Cyberman

Sr Member
Hi guys I'm trying to recreate this classic Cyberman costume from the late 1960s... The only thing that is stopping me (as I have all the other parts plus the helmet) is the rubber Frogmans suit... It must be able to be sprayed silver and fit my 6ft3 slender frame.

Heres a toy action figure of the character in question.

Many thanks

Arrgggh. I JUST sold one I found at the Thrift Store, let me see if I can get it back, because the guy just wanted it, he had no plans for it.
Laffo.

Wetsuits run *really* small, so you'd need an XL, minimum, just for the length. And that's not certain, by any means. Depending on your build, it might require an XXL or XXXL. Good luck with the project.

God it would be so cool if I could get this type of suit... Please guys help me out here. This is so important to the whole of Cyber-fandom!

That looks VERY promising.... I managed to buy two very old unusable Frog suits a few years ago... These are being saved as the last throw of the dice measure. What I am thinking of doing is opening appart and exposing the flattened patterns of one of these old suits (basically cutting it open) so I can use them to make a stencil pattern.

I'll investigate this route very soon, if nothing else shows up in the meantime (i.e. a supplier that still manufactures them) :love

So ItsThatGuy how did you actually sow or glue this thing together?

Cheers

Phil

Attached are three different types of Cyber costume designs that could be realised if I got round the costume/neoprene issues:)

OK, been watching this thread & am lovin' it - time to take the plunge (pun intended?) and put together a T. Baker-era cyberman.

Have yet to really peer down this rabbit hole, but are there any decent vintage Cyberman construction sites out there, or barring that, you willing to put together a how-to? I've got a number friends that I can get on-board surprisingly easy - expected a good ol' fashioned Cyberman / Stormtroopers rumble at a con near you soon enough ... :angel

Regarding old wetsuits, honestly, shouldn't be too hard to score one on eBay, though neoprene doesn't age terribly well.

The neoprene is actually very thin and easy to sew on most standard sewing machines.

Here are the swatches that I requested:

Here's the thickness:

The thickness is compared to a US 5 cent coin and a 501st coin.

Did you specifically request those colors? [Edit: ohh, I thought the OP posted.. not the zam wessel thing..]

You might prefer to use a No. 01 white or No. 12 light gray base as seen in the color chart below.
Here's another potential source you might want to call. I haven't ordered from 'em, but I have communicated with them before and they've been really helpful.

Well I made a Revenge Cyberman costume for Comic Con 2008 and Galllifrey 2009. I agree the wetsuit is essential to the look. It's an older style and pretty much can only be had on ebay - modern wetsuits aren't made two piece like that anymore and usually have a lot of logos and designing to them that makes it hard to hide even with a good paint job.

I stand 6' in boots- and I got an XL. I suggest the same for you if not an XXL. Usuallly older wet suits crop up on ebay every few weeks. What you can also do is buy the farmer john style pants seperately and the neoprene jacket as two seperate purchases. This is what I ended up with after my first wetsuit ultimately proved to be too small after painting. So check also under neoprene shirts, jackets and pants too. And hang in there, something will turn up. If you are desperate I did consider buying a bunch of neoprene and having a new suit made like one of the other posters suggested that is if you have the skills or know someone who does. But I'd consider that a last resort.

Also for the Revenge you'll need to modify the lower legs with either leather leggings like I did or use some open neoprene or foam so it creates that sorta straight leg look they had. A normal wetsuit will grip the ankles and be useless here- but ideal for the Invasion variation.

I'd also recommend going for the thinnest (I got a 1-2mm thickness) neoprene you can to help with the heat you'll have in wearing this.

Also remember neoprene is absorbent and when painting this it'll take a few coats to really get it to gleam silver to match the helmet.

How are you doing the chest unit, tubings and gun if you're going after the Invasion Cyberman?

I'm mainly looking to upgrade the shoulder/back cups/discs and find a way to better keep my helmet close din the back panel and maybe if I can find a way to hide it- actually put a voice modulator on the Helmet so I can talk and be heard!

Here's my how-to post from dw_cosplay on how I made my Cyberman in 2007 and 2008 and did upgrades in 2009.

The wetsuit was just looked over for you. No, it will not fit you, yes it is perfect for the Cyberman. It is really dry rotted at this point as well, I would hesitate to paint it. We are at 35+ years of additional exposure to these things now. I don't know if they all have this dry rot problem, but the one I found does. It's doing the same thing old tires do - tons of cracks.

A quick search for Vintage Wetsuits yielded this:

Here's a brand new top:

Search for "Beavertail Wetsuit."

This is going to be easy to find now.

I got some of that Neoprene stuff... a batch of samples... So I might plug for the thickest grade in pale purple grey. I sprayed it silver and it seems to hold its colour well.

Thanks guys

Phil

Nice Costume... How tall are you? Heres my attempt from years ago

That looks great!
I must admit, ive always wanted a helmet myself, though off the top of my head i couldnt say which version

I am a fan of the Revenge look, and would also like to build up one of these.

Any advice with regard to the hoses/piping, elbow and knee accessories, as well as the shoulder 'tin' would be greatly appreciated
