[UPDATED 4/7/09] Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [New pics on last few pages]

The fictional universe that (barely) contains Dr Grordbort's Infallible Aether Oscillators is the brainchild of Weta Designer Greg Broadmore.

It all started as a series of drawings and acrylic paintings that Greg made. Richard Taylor and Greg conceived the idea to bring these fantastical weapons to a craving public and the first three Rayguns saw the light of day in 2007.

Since then, Weta has released a book, Dr Grordbort's Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory, and several more Rayguns.

You can explore a world where interplanetary sport shooting is always top-of-mind for the glitterati at www.drgrordborts.com.

Does it come with a pith helmet? :angel

Re: The UNVEILING of Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [WETA]

I brought my son's pith helmet with me and dressed a bit appropriately for the pics.
That is one heavy son of a gun. Incredible packaging and a universe of material for it. A very cool piece. Mr. Simon had many extras that were are normally included with this piece that just made it more impressive. Photo ID, custom paperwork for the owner, shirts, pin, etc.

Odd thing though, Mr. Simon "is a fine gentleman that smells of lint" according to the ID. I wonder how they knew...

It took time to unpack it, get it out and displayed and to fuss over it, well worth the fuss by the way. So much so, forgot about lunch, suffered McDonalds at 4 o'clock on the way home. A fun day to see some friends and admire a super new prop piece.

Nice blunderbus! :)

Your shirt (the one you have on with the pith helmet) looks like something I'm after. Any details on where you got it?

Re: The UNVEILING of Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [WETA]

www.travelsmith.com for the shirt. Its a seasonal item though, you might not be able to get it at this time although you can get the safari jackets always.

Re: The UNVEILING of Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [WETA]

How about a picture of the side? Looking down the barrel really doesn't help much.

Re: The UNVEILING of Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [WETA]

As the pictures to come will prove, this piece is first class all the way down to the packaging. "Packaging" isn't even the right word for it, because every thing including the crate it was shipped in is part of the overall presentation of this piece.

As much as I am constantly amazed at the talent and creativity of the members of this board, I am truly amazed at this piece of art that Weta produced. I can hardly bring myself to call it a "prop"... it's more like a sculpture. A really cool sculpture with fine details and working parts that helps the imagination to run wild!

I'm glad that I had a chance to stop by and visit shoot the breeze with the Jeffs, and really happy to help uncrate that beauty. It was a great afternoon, and I hated to have to leave as early as I did.

The only thing left to say is... MORE PICS! :lol

This is probably my favorite of the weta guns. Would love to see more pictures!!

Re: The Doctor Grordbort's Adventure

So Tripoli and Rocketeer25 have arrived to assist me. First Lonnie insults me. "When are you going to clean out this pig stye of a basement?" he demands. "I warned you last time..."

Then I demonstrate my maladroitness with my wife's digital camera.

The boys are unimpressed.

"Give me that!" Tripoli growls.

The boys put the crate up on a small table....

And start tearing in. We end up with a naked crate with a small envelope taped to it.

Tripoli has to be forcibly restrained from attacking the crate with a crowbar.

"Wait while I get some of those end on shots that Kerr Avon likes so much." I tell him.

"What is this?" Rocketeer25 holds up a non-steampunkish tool from the attached envelope.

Rocketeer25 begins unscrewing the crate lid.

Re: [UPDATED 4/5/2009] The UNVEILING of Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [WETA]

After R25 takes out the bajillionth screw and I've resigned myself to an intermnable wait, Tripoli remembers that as an Eagle Scout, he is always prepared.

He produces a curious looking red handled tool and while unfastening the bolts that R25 hasn't gotten to yet, bores us with that old chestnut about turning back the Nazi horde with nothing more than a small pocket knife and gritty Buckeye dtermination; thus making the world's supply of cuckoo clocks, quality chocolates, and pornography of questionable standards safe for another generation.

You know the one.

We've got the lid off.

Re: [UPDATED 4/5/2009] The UNVEILING of Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [WETA]

Fastened to the underside of the lid is a small packet containing a T-Shirt, a Dingus Directory signed by Greg Broadmore, and a mysterious but heavy envelope closed with a wax seal.

Then I hear that sound you never want to hear.

"Uh-oh..."

MORE TOMORROW

Re: [UPDATED 4/5/2009] The UNVEILING of Doctor Grordbort's Unnatural Selector [WETA]

The only growling I remember was my stomach for lunch. :lol

As for the basement, the crate had been sitting there since November. The entire basement is filled with boxes and a museum full of props lying around. Looks like the Indiana Jones warehouse in area 51. If he could get it organized and unpacked, it would be great, although my jaw falls far enough to the floor already with the "stuff" he has piled around. :cool

Everyone should carry a Swiss pocket knife, helped get that crate undone much faster with the gazillion heavy duty screws that were on the crate. Weta was not fooling around when they crated that piece up. And given the heavy duty solid metal pieces that were inside, it was important they do so. Although...

Lonnie was fantastic with the help and I hope he did not get into trouble staying as long as he did on his lunch hour. Mr. Simon wanted it documented well, so I hope Mr. Simon does not minds sorting through all the many pictures we took to make sure we got it all documented to his satisfaction.

Jeff, nice picture of the ceiling.

1 out of 25 pics was actually useful, glad I could inspire you take one that shows the actual prop in question. Looks pretty cool, but would be nice to have another pic or two with the wrapping off of it.

Oh, took plenty of pictures... :)

He's kind of a rude, impatient little manga fella, isn't he? Immediate gratification is paramount amongst the cartoon set. Excuse me, anime. :lol
