Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

I'd rather have the SEs with the added scenes removed. That way the film would still be cleaned up, but you get to see it as it originally was.

With the screwed up color, too dark, crushed blacks, etc.? Of course any new release will be cleaned up and restored, but hopefully done right this time.

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

George Lucas is not prone to starting false rumors. Least of all this particular one.

If Landis wasn't pulling our leg then this is probably indeed happening.

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

Best post of the thread!

Not enough people even realize how messed up the color etc are!

The "crushed black" is what makes us see the damn octagons around the tie fighters...

The current BR versions are GARBAGE in terms of "color correction".

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

Yeah the SE color has been trash from the get go: Luke's green ANH saber. Vader's ROTJ playboy bunny blade. Yeeech.

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

Agreed. The films need a ground up restoration to fix the damage that has been done.

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

It's necessary to correct the horrendous color and sound issues alone. They're difficult for me to even watch. The simple fact that Lucas signed off on THIS as the ultimate presentation of these films is extremely telling given the horrible job done on them. You look at the restoration work done on films like Jaws or The Wizard of Oz and then compare it to the Blurays for Star Wars and it's amazing vomiting isn't induced. If this is indeed true, then it means Star Wars may FINALLY be getting it's long deserved and overdue archival restoration and preservation.

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

still have the old vcr tapes. not digitalised, not altered and no added scenes, love them.

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

My daughter watched Empire with me today,.....her first time,.....aged 8

We watched Harmy's Despecialsed,.....when you watch a movie you've seen so many times with someone who's never seen it,....you look at it differently,...you see things you've never noticed before,.....It was brilliant,.....funny & well acted,...the only negative I could pick out was how dark the picture was,....how much was lost in the crushed blacks,.....Harmy had tried to componsate & there were some parts that were blown out,....mainly on Hoth snow & Bespin skies

I really cant wait to see an improved scan

It has to happen,.....all we have is Lucas's 90's scan

Technology has moved on since then

I have no idea. I'd have to see a comparison I guess. All I know is they screwed up a few lines like when R2 is eaten on Dagobah Luke usually said "You're luck you don't taste very good." and now it says something like "You're lucky to get out of there."

That's not a screw-up. That's a different audio mix. There were multiple audio mixes for the OOT even before the SE stuff was done. "Close the blast doors!" was one of them. Luke's "You're lucky" line differences is another.

Anyway, onto the subject at hand.

Personally, I find it doubtful that this is true in the way people want it to be true.

First, I have no doubt that Disney is restoring and remastering the films. Disney's pretty big on archiving and film preservation, so I can easily see where they'd want to clean up the crappy job done previously. It's anyone's guess whether they do this with the original prints, or try to also redo the SE stuff. So, in the sense of "Disney is working with the films to fix them up," yeah, I think that part's true.

Second, I have no doubt that Disney would like to release the films itself, especially in the run-up to Episode VII and the immediate aftermath. The film's release is going to generate massive interest in Star Wars again, so Disney will absolutely want to capitalize on that. The remaining question is...the distribution rights.

And here is the wrinkle we run into every single time. Fox owns the rights to the OT for distro purposes. The rights for ESB and ROTJ expire in, I think, 2020 or something. Not next week, but not so far off that Disney can't afford to just sit tight. Fox owns distro rights for ANH in perpetuity. So, the real question is...money. What's it worth to Disney to get those films back fully under their control? What's it worth to Fox to give up those rights? Is it worth it to both parties to put the remastered/restored/whatever release out and split the take? Is it worth it for Disney to buy it back from Fox? Is it worth it to Fox to sell the rights?

Answer: nobody knows. George might, if anyone at Disney or Disney/LFL approached him to say "Yo, George. You cool with us reissuing the old version you pulled? We'd clean it up and stuff, but otherwise, the theatrical releases. That ok?" But if that conversation hasn't happened, then it's all just rumor and hearsay.

Anyway, bottom line, we don't have any real news. Just speculation and rumor. Don't get your hopes up for anything happening soon. If it works out, awesome. I'll be happy to be wrong. But I tend to agree with Bryan that Disney's more likely to just reissue the existing blu-rays in a new package or something.

This is a great documentary showing just how crappy the color and sound is on the blu-rays and SE's

I watched Empire last year for my birthday. I work in Theatre so we watched it on a 50' wide scrim with about 30 of my friends.

You forget how funny it is when you watch it by itself. It really is a movie about a failed hyperdrive

No offense, but I don't see this as being the massive problem people make it out to be.

In the past, if GL wanted a re-release, he'd put it out via fox and they'd get their cut and LFL got the bigger cut and life went on. Just because Disney has their own distribution wing doesn't mean they HAVE to go through that come hell or high water. They COULD realize they're going to make their purchase price back for the most part of E7, and turn a profit by the time E9 is complete and just re-release them and let fox have their cut. Big deal. They could also ask fox how much they want to buy those rights back.At that point, you pay it and move on or simply re-release as under the current deal and move on. In the event that they opt to re-release via fox again, LFL still gets the larger share, so, who gives a crap? I know you can't underestimate corporate greed and arrogance, but it seems there are options in all situations that are very far from the end of the world.

I don't see a re-release happening before E7 as you'd think the first would be imminent. Give 4 3-4 weeks, then 5, then 6 with a break til E7 hits. Not much of a re-release to do all 3 for 1-2 weeks around thanksgiving or just the week before or single marathon showings.

Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!

I'll believe it when I see it, though this is perhaps the most concrete of the rumors I've seen. Release it on Blu-Ray and digital please.

Because they get 5 of the 6 films back for FREE by waiting another 5 years, 5 years where the main focus is new film product. They will be releasing the 6 films on Netflix and other streaming services in the SE format for the OT. They have no reason to pay Fox a dime at the moment to try and release the OOT. They can just wait it out.
