Re: Star Wars OT UNALTERED Bluray!!!
I have no idea. I'd have to see a comparison I guess. All I know is they screwed up a few lines like when R2 is eaten on Dagobah Luke usually said "You're luck you don't taste very good." and now it says something like "You're lucky to get out of there."
That's not a screw-up. That's a different audio mix. There were multiple audio mixes for the OOT even before the SE stuff was done. "Close the blast doors!" was one of them. Luke's "You're lucky" line differences is another.
Anyway, onto the subject at hand.
Personally, I find it doubtful that this is true in the way people want it to be true.
First, I have no doubt that Disney is restoring and remastering the films. Disney's pretty big on archiving and film preservation, so I can easily see where they'd want to clean up the crappy job done previously. It's anyone's guess whether they do this with the original prints, or try to also redo the SE stuff. So, in the sense of "Disney is working with the films to fix them up," yeah, I think that part's true.
Second, I have no doubt that Disney would
like to release the films itself, especially in the run-up to Episode VII and the immediate aftermath. The film's release is going to generate massive interest in Star Wars again, so Disney will absolutely want to capitalize on that. The remaining question is...the distribution rights.
And here is the wrinkle we run into every single time. Fox owns the rights to the OT for distro purposes. The rights for ESB and ROTJ expire in, I think, 2020 or something. Not next week, but not so far off that Disney can't afford to just sit tight. Fox owns distro rights for ANH in perpetuity. So, the real question is...money. What's it worth to Disney to get those films back fully under their control? What's it worth to Fox to give up those rights? Is it worth it to both parties to put the remastered/restored/whatever release out and split the take? Is it worth it for Disney to buy it back from Fox? Is it worth it to Fox to sell the rights?
Answer: nobody knows. George might, if anyone at Disney or Disney/LFL approached him to say "Yo, George. You cool with us reissuing the old version you pulled? We'd clean it up and stuff, but otherwise, the theatrical releases. That ok?" But if that conversation hasn't happened, then it's all just rumor and hearsay.
Anyway, bottom line, we don't have any real news. Just speculation and rumor. Don't get your hopes up for anything happening soon. If it works out, awesome. I'll be happy to be wrong. But I tend to agree with Bryan that Disney's more likely to just reissue the existing blu-rays in a new package or something.
