can i use modeling clay?

I wouldn't recommend a non-hardening modeling clay, as it's too soft and easy to damage or loose its shape. The reason I mentioned an air-hardening modeling compound (like DAS) is when it's hard you can carve it and sand it and get a really nice finished product for molding (and it's inexpensive).

DAS is available at most arts & crafts stores in the USA (I don't know where you live). You can find it for under $5 per pound here. I did a quick search and found many sellers at amazon.com, here's two links

It's just three strips of card glued one on top of the other. when they are glued, you can just give them a light sanding to make them smooth

Use whatever you have available locally to make the vocoder... modeling compound, clay, putty, sculpey... it could be done in cardboard, but it's take some extra skill to look good.

A simple solution to make the vocoder would be gluing down rubber tubes. The three center tubes/rods are about 7cm in diameter, the four (2 sets of 2) on the outside about 5.5-6 cm diameter. If you use rubber tubes, cut holes in the mask where the ends of the tubes can go into.

I did mine in Card. Three layers.....then sanded them round and applied paint.

Hi Atlanthia, i am new to the forum, I just joined yesterday and have read in amazement various threads such as the Amazing Spiderman costume of MCL34N's, somebody's (Can't remember whose sorry) Robocop costume, etc but I just wanted to say that this is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen! I read your thread from start to finish and am amazed at the what you achieved with £10, household rubbish and a bucket load of talent! Truly inspiring

On top of that the Dark Knight guitar you have painted is absolutely incredible!

The black strip over the eyes is just strips of thick card, glued one on top of the other.
As for the front side panels, I'm not sure exactly to what you are referring...

It totally depends on the card thickness. As for your second point, the answer is in your question. You finish with finishing plaster, so PVA glue goes on first.

Well this has inspired me and I'm going to try making my own helmet with a similar method. I'm going to try and keep costs down but I am willing to spend a little more than £10 so hopefully that will pay off.

In your first post though you say you made this as more of a model rather than a wearable item - do you think this method of creating a helmet could work as a wearable item though? It's probably not the most durable thing in the world but do you think I could create a helmet like this and wear it just for one day? The Eurogamer Expo is coming up and I have never looked into cosplay before, nor have I ever made something like this but I really want to.

I'm thinking about going as one of the Combine from Half-Life 2.

Yes, I removed all the inner structure, once the construction was complete, and it held up perfectly. It was strong as you like and totally wearable. I would hope that your helmet would similarly last for as long as you keep it!
