I wouldn't recommend a non-hardening modeling clay, as it's too soft and easy to damage or loose its shape. The reason I mentioned an air-hardening modeling compound (like DAS) is when it's hard you can carve it and sand it and get a really nice finished product for molding (and it's inexpensive).
