Tutorial : Creating a rust effect with pastels

Hello,

This is a quick tutorial on a few tricks I like to use to achieve cool looking weathering effects with pastel chalks.

A lot of times pastels are used dry to be brushed on, but this is the wet method.

This is what you'll need.

Orange pastel chalk
Burnt sienna pastel chalk
Cup
60 grit sandpaper
Long bristled pointed brush
91% alcohol

Rub equal amounts of the sienna and orange colored chalk onto the sandpaper, then shake the powder into the cup.

Add roughly a cap full of the alcohol, then mix.

Dip your brush into the solution. Allow it to soak into the bristles, use a lot for more weathering, or just a little for dabs here and there.

Carefully dab the tip of the brush where you want the color to go, it will run into all the cracks and crevices quickly.

After the alcohol evaporates, it will leave behind the gritty residue of the chalk, creating a very realistic example of real rust.

You can use the same with black to reproduce oil and hydraulic leaks.

And this is the result.

Re: Creating a rust effect with pastels

So all I need to do is a little pastel weathering and that's what I get?
Man, how easy is that! :lol

Looks like I need to go out and get some pastels. Thanks Rich. :thumbsup

Awesome, thanks a lot for sharing!

I added "Tutorial" to the thread title, for better reference in searches!

I wish this had been around years ago when I built a lot of models, it's so much simpler than the tutorials you always saw in magazines. Very cool.

The evaporating alcohol is a AWESOME trick - and so easy I can’t believe I never thought of it myself :confused

Thanks for sharing man!

Thanks for the tips! I've had problems with pastels disappearing when I clear coat the model. Do you have this problem?

For me, weathering powders seem to work much better than the pastels.

Clear coats have always subdued lighter pastels or accentuated the dark the pastel effects on models I've made. Just seems to be how they work. What's nice about pastels is that they're subtle, but it's best to not clear coat them.
