Tron Legacy Costume

You guys/girls are posting some amaaaazing stuff

I'm 60% done. Need the disc, change the pants, add a bit of more attachments, then figure out the whole electric tape thing (major headache since i'm lazy)

Just wanted to pop in and say great work everyone! I've gone through all 77 pages so far.

You guys really should consider creating your own Tron costuming forum. It would make research and building a lot easier to organize.

I just picked up a hotknife, eva foam (floor plates) and heatgun this week to do just this sort of build. It will be my VERY FIRST armor set of any kind, other than real chainmaile, so any input people have on foam armor building.. let me/us know your insights.

is there any way I can contact you?
I want to see how you go about doing this and see build pics if possible!

@SHEEPGIRL
for elecTRONica you are looking about 69 dollars for the 1 park ticket i think.
Then you just go in and its there
as for the shoot, you might check out the el capitan maybe?
im not sure really.
I live down here, so if you have any questions shoot me a pm.
I am not 100% sure what you are looking for in the shoot :p

Revamping my failed-attempted TRON-Inspired suit, but seems that I was somewhat thinking of maybe using that foam to do part of my 'armor' shall we say(?). Still gonna use the 3-D fabrics for the Armorparts though - probably cover the foam over with them thus making my own armor(how many times I watched that 'Sirens dressed Sam Flynn' so inspired me creatively)....;)

So, I have read over a lot of this thread, but I signed up for this specifically (and the fact that I want to start getting into this whole type of thing hahah)
but did anyone think of using eva foam to build the suit part of it? You can use a hot knife used for cutting foam to shape it more. eva foam is very flexible and good to work with.
I myself am going to be using this to attempt to make a suit soon, I just wanted some feedback and maybe to give some other people ideas.

My plan for the suit is to use a morphsuit as the under part - Morphsuits - life is more fun in colour
not using the hood though
then building all the "armor" part of the suit up with eva phone that I have shaped up.

I don't know if this is very practical or if it is a good idea, but just a suggestion maybe.

OK
so I got a video of my helmet buuuuuut I CANT CONVERT .MTS TO .MPEG or a working file to upload. Goddamnit. I tried looking up these programs to convert but they all have limits (watermark/time) unless I purchase it...

Anyhow I took snapshots.

And posting more photos of Quorra from my blog

As you can see, I totally dropped and broke my original mold. So I can't make anymore vacuumform copies. BUT I'm going to make another mold($$$$$). A better one. Since I know how to do it now. And make tons and tons of copies. I got access to an industrial vacuum machine. It's huuuge. HUUUGE. HUUUUGE
Should I add lights to Quorra's helmet?

A lot of messups on my outfit. Going to try to fix it up before my photoshoot.

Anyhow everyone's input from this forum was reaaally helpful. Special thanks to Annisse for going out of her way to answer my nooblet questions!

ALSO //excited

I GOT A RIDE DOWN TO LA cuz my friends are going to ALA (this wednesday-monday 6th-10th)

I'm doing a photoshoot down there. BUt I don't know anything about LA ...
can someone tell me the best places for a Tron shoot?
And how much does it cost to get into Electronica? Is that a separate event or part of disneyland?
And how hard is it to sneak a costume into electronica?

Oh and I need friends. Add me on facebook or something.

Dear SheepGirl (sign, I find it ironic because of my last name)

Epic Quorra helmet! I can't wait to see it at ALA!!!!! As for lighting your helmet, if you have time, but its still epic without (maybe reflective tape as a quick fix).

Unfortunately elecTRONica is part of california disneyland; $75 one day one park. And the event itself is 6:30 till 10 closing, and its awesome! As for sneaking a costume in, -well thats iffy. I can because I charm my way in, but seriously mines is subtle enough to pass thru the disney firewall. Quorra is so blatant I'd suggest baggin it and putting it on inside. Or Wear a big coat and take it off once inside, which means you'll need a porter (someone to carry your stuff while you make epic poses for the camera). Plus NO HELMET, do not bring it as they will not let you in as in the case of justin who had to rent a locker for it.

Don't forget that there is a Tron Cosplay gathering and movie viewing at EL Capitan Theater in Hollywood this friday at 10:45pm, buy your tickets online. (I'm bringing 3 other, 2 of which were at the city walk premiere and didn't have their cosplays ready, u no hu!)

Here are my versions of MCP Legacy:
(left is original, right is upgraded OS)

I know I need to redesign my loin cloth, because people are miss reading the parts above "M"

P.S. just got a white flynn disc I can't wait to fill with red led's!

Hey guys! First time here. Came here for ideas for lighting for my CLUs robes idea! Plenty of helpful info except one question! Im going to make the robes but should I stick with the orange? Or go with my own mark on it and make the lighting green?

I got mine at "Harbor Freight" as red and white striped reflective tape. Huge roll, but I had to cut out all the red separately to use.

EPIC weekend approaches us! The kind we should've had no thanks to the rain. ALA and E L Capitan!!!!!!

So i ride a motorcycle and eneded up ordering the Sam Flynn Suit from Ud replicas.. just gotta get some ideas on how to light up with el tape when i finally get the suit. Anyone here can tell me how to connect 2 pieces of el tape together to make a longer piece using only 1 inverter connected to the end of the 1st piece? Is there a way to cut and connect el tape at different angles together?
Thanks in advance

Having seen Compasses Sam Flynn cosplay live, I'll tell you that overlapping is fine. I was very nitpicky about designing mine, and then I saw the movie and the epic cosplayers on this board. I originally planned on buying large sheets of EL and cutting a pattern out of it, because I worried about gaps. But now having seen the movie productions suits and the people here on this board. I realized the more cost effective and less headachie would be strips overlapping to form the angles, plus you don't need to be super math accurate, cause in the end you're human and it will curl and bend where it wants too. In pics, its really hard to spot them (gaps) when lit up.

Best bet is to spend a few hours and read all the post while taking notes and pay particular attention to Annisse, compass, justin, and black feathers (if I forgot anyone apologies, but I met these guys live so they stick in my mind)

I've taken the Anisse approach, reflective tape first, glowie later. But my spin is that my cosplay is entirely add on. It not sewn, taped or a part of my nice trench coat, I can take it off my coat at any time, and the light up one will be the same. I'll post pics on how mines just sits atop my coat.

Plus: Seriously take your time! And dedicate time. You don't want to end up hyping up one and not having it for the next con or sequel.

Frag, Anisse, you're the twin sister of Quorra :eek - if you don't win the contest, the world has really gone mad!

thank you :) we shall see!

Sheepgirl! WOW! on both your costume and helmet. I think the helmet especially because you mentioned on your blog that you are a beginning prop maker right? Well that looks pretty advanced to me. I have been making props for CONs for 10 years and have never made any helmet. That is great work! Glad to be of help too :) so you went with Eddie's and my shower curtain method for your Quorra light strips?

I wish I had access to a vacuumform machine. Again, wish I had the Mythbusters guys set up :)

As for ElecTRONica at DCA yeah, you gotta buy the park's admission ticket to get into ElecTRONica. It is worth it though if you can spend a day there.

I'd say do what I did and have a shoot at the TRON billboard sign on Sunset Blvd. if you Google it you will find the location. It is basically down Sunset right across from Mel's diner. I love it and can't wait to go back again!

Oh since you will be in LA, can you make our group meet-up to see the movie at the El Capitan on Friday the 7th at 10:45pm?

Okay Members here might be some good news. I don't think many of us are good at Using & connecting electrical wires for any Tron Outfits. I Noticed ANNISE Used 3M TAPE. But there 's a way to heighten the effect so it not only glows, but it's not expensive. I looked a glow in the dark paints. I always thought there was only green. But I was wrong. They have all the Tron colors. The trick is using a base color of white. Then you paint the top with the Glow paint. There's even a website that claims it will stay lit up for hours after being charged in light. The effect is the same as the EL tape. And a lot cheaper. There's some websites that are not up to par. Make sure as you search they have the intese phosphorus. I'm going this route since I'm on a budget! Good luck to everyone!

I used the glow in the dark paint for my costume for Tron Night and the midnight release, and it worked fairly well. I couldn't get a photograph of me with it glowing, but it did glow. I was going to try to make one with el tape/sheet/wire for Fan Expo 2011, but I didn't consider that it had to all be connected (duh, lol)! Maybe I'll just try to improve on my fabric paint one, or try the reflective tape. I gotta figure something out soon, lol, it's in August!

Thanks for posting feedback. I used the RED glowpaint. It looked Pink. It charges well under the UV LIGHT only. If anyone uses this paint stick with BLUE Or white colors. You may also use this on Vinyl shower curtains. Just make sure they are white. Best of Luck!!:)

Question:
Whats a good way to go about making a disc?
I am doing a cheap way for a temporary one just for a quick outing with some people from my church.
Helping with the Jr. High group there, so nothing fancy is needed.
But for l8r, I want to make a better one, any suggestions?

You can get the NON-lightup version for $10. Also Target normally has the deluxe version for $15.

I took one of the basic discs ($8 at Target) and just painted the inner, outer rings and 'dome dots' with 'Clear when Dry' Blue-UV Reactive Paint, as well as placing in alternating strips a 1/4in thick line of Green-UV Reactive Gaffers Tape. Then I painted the underside of the disc black, varnished the painted areas.

Finally put 8 - 1/4in x 1/16in Rare Earth magnets along the inner rim and on the outside back of my jacket (covered by small layers of black tape and sewn in place). The disc sat in place, never moved once unless I slid it free for use, an entire night at the TRON:L Release Party in NYC at a very busy night club.

I would say total cost for parts used and the like, about $11.00 in all.
