Tron Legacy Costume

When I make any progress on mine, I'll photgraph it and save the pictures for it's own thread. There'll pretty much be step by step instructions with pictures to do it the way I'm doing it.

Good to know, thank you for the reply.

Now I just need to figure out how in the hell to properly size a wetsuit with enough room for all the modifications it will need.

I am doing a Tron Legacy inspired costume atm and as I source materials I am finding it hard to get runs of EL wire more than 3m (9.5ft) that run off 2 x AA batteries (I am not going to bother trying to diffuse light to create a light panel, too much involved), anyone else struck the 3m threshold on el wire?

Oh found this on eBay, too rich for me:

[AUCTION LINK REMOVED]

Oops removed forgot about the auction forbiddance, I was only linking to show a great disc, $283.00 bid so far yikes!

Justin (actordiver) can probably back me up on this but the short answer is 'yes'.

Let's say you have an inverter in your identity disk housing with a 12v power supply. Your inverter would have a 2-pin connector running from it. That connector would plug into whatever you were powering, whether it be an EL sheet piece or EL tape:

Simply run wires from each, individual EL piece you have, solder them to the main lead wire that's running from your inverter and there you go. You can mix and match whatever you wish. Thinking about substituting some EL Tape for some of my straight line designs myself...

Dang. Took a break for a few days from thr RPF, left off on page 72 and now on 77! This thread is going to be in the 1000s by SDCC :p

Thanks Compass, Jinyo and Actordiver for the inverter EL Tape/Film/Sheeting advice. I understand what you are all saying about runing them parellel but Jezzzzz yes, that is going to be a complete pain in the ass!

So you mean when I run let's say, a straight line of EL Tape, then at the end I want to attach my circle of EL Sheet. Do I connect the end lead wires of El Tape and El Sheet together but then have to run seperately the El Tape lead wires to the inverter and the EL Sheet lead wires to the inverter and solder all those wires together then with a plug (which is what I am using like in Compass's pics) plug that one soldered wire into the inverter?

Sorry so confusing, pic diagrams help if any one wants to go threw the trouble of demotrating this. I am just trying to understand how to connect the El Tape straight strip pieces to the El Sheet circle shapes I design.

Thanks for the compliment! I have no idea who I'd contact at Disney for something like that. I have had people ask me to make them a copy, but they always balk at the price. (You, of all people, know the kind of hours that go into making something like this, and I'm not giving those hours away for free when I could be using them to make other stuff for myself. Plus EL lights and good fabrics ain't free.)

EL film and EL tape are the same thing, just in different shapes, so you can run them off the same inverter. You can even run EL wire off the same inverter. BUT everything I've read on the subject recommends wiring EL stuff in parallel, not series. This means you have to run wires from every single piece of EL film all the way back to the inverter. If you are thinking "That sounds like a huge pain in the ass," then you are correct. All the wires then meet in two big lumps of solder, which then get connected to the inverter, or get attached to a little plug that gets plugged into the inverter.

And that's why my dress is so poofy. The huge mass of wires underneath!

Yes no kidding about how ppl run for the hills and you never hear from the again when you tell them how much you are going to charge them for a custom made costume. I tell them my price, GONE. My free time, labor not to mention the materials I use, don't come cheap. I don't do half ass work, and I am not about to undersell myself and charge half ass prices. Those types of ppl do not make costumes at all and do not understand how painful a good costume is, especially when you are doing it completely by yourself. I think Disney should be kissing our asses and hire us to work on their movie costumes. They have teams of ppl. We are doing these lovely creations solely. Be proud ppl! ;) Well, your dress is awesome and if you do recreate for another person, I hope they pay you what the dress and your time is worth!

Protip: when building your costume make sure its easy to get in and out of. if its not build a way.

Im building the base armor for lighting to go on to for a original costume. and omg its a work out getting in and out of that.

ill post pics when im somewhat satisfied.

Tell me about it. I need at least one person to help me get in and out of my costume. Total pain in the ass. No costume that looks like these costumes is going to be easy to get in and out of. If it's is easy to put on and take off. It probably doesn't look that good ;) if you suffer wearing your art. You MADE A GOOD costume.

I don't have any official reference, but like you, I've been growing frustrated with the distinct lack of basic Quorra reference. I can't sew to save my life, but what I can do is draw. So, I've drawn up as much as I can decipher of Quorra's costume from what reference pictures I've gathered. So here is Quorra from the front, side, and back. Hope it helps!

(You can see bigger versions of each on my blog ----> Quorra Costume Design « The Art of Briana Lamb )

OMG! you sure can draw girl! Your drawings of Quorra are totally perfect. You mentioned in another post where those Quorra Evolution game pics were posted that your drawing work was done for nothing or something like that. I really don't think so at all. You even got some points to the costume that I missed or just couldn't make because of lack of time or lack of resources. I really think your drawings are spot on! GOOD JOB!

Haha

Even though you were probably joking, no, I do not work for Disney. The reason I'm not so worried about budget is because I plan to make the armor very durable, more so than the screen used suits. If this is something I'm putting this much work into I want it to last a long time.

Anyway, I'll be looking into life casting and what materials work, I'll keep posting here. As I said I've never done this before so I'm not totally sure where to start looking. I've found Smooth-On from looking around the RPF, any opinions on their products? I'm also not sure what clay would be good for the sculpting, so if anyone had pointers for that it'd help me out a lot too. The ideal clay in my head is easy to sculpt and holds shape well, then hardens. Not sure if this is possible because I'm kind of a noob, but if it is does anyone know a source? Thanks for any advice, hopefully I can make a costume that looks as good as some of the other users suits here :p

I have used SMOOT-ON materials. Very good quality but very pricey.

hey i just finished the basics of my costume, any suggestoins or comments?

AWESOME work!

Ill be going to ALA with my tron cosplay so let me know where we should meet up, i suggest crashing the disney meet up :p

Oh man I was thinking of going to ALA in my Quorra costume but it is not really Anime related plus I am going to be wearing it on Friday night to our El Capitan movie screening meet up in the evening. Don't know if I can take wearing that thing all day Friday then again Sat. :p only make those kinda exceptions for SDCC or DragonCON. The suffering wearing your costume factor. HA!

Man, so bummed I missed out on getting one of those. :( I'd like to know how this person got so ,ucky to get that Tron Legacy party package any way? If they are selling it on Ebay, it must have not meant that much to them now. I know if I got all that stuff, no way would I sell it anywhere for all the money in the world. That disc alone is bad ass YO!

Oh here is a little preview photo from the set I took with photographer Justice Sommer at the light up TRON sign billboard on Sunset Blvd. He will be entering my costume photo into the Zivity.com Tron inspired contest. Wish me luck! :D

Thanks Annisse! Sadly, I was having a rough morning when I said that. I wish I could delete that post, but that's what I get for wearing my heart on my sleeve! Glad to hear the drawings are of use. :)

Btw, there was something I noticed when I was drawing that reference - it looks like there's two separate materials on Quorra's upper body armour. Am I just seeing things? It's like the part going over the breasts is a shinier latex-like material and just below it, extending around the ribcage & back is the foam latex. Any thoughts?

GREAT costume pictures EnviroGravity and Annisse!

TELL me about it :3 I know its not related to this thread specifically
For all you tf2 people as well this was my costume for otakon last year
100_3510.jpg

spent about 3 months on it total, and that minigun weighed about 25lbs... I carried it around for like the entire day and man we're my arms dying.

I am NO stranger to sacrificing for quality :p

It looks like the hexagon pattern is molded into the foam rubber across Quorra's chest. That's what I've suspected, at least.

Hey Annisse - what exactly did you do to your disc to modify it? It's so BRIGHT! Or is that just reflec tape? I'd love to hear your process on modding it because I know nothing about electronics. Or am I going to have to wade through this epic 77 page thread again lol?

(Oh and congrats on the you-know-what! I'm excited to finally meet you guys in person on Friday - we technically met at the Leia photoshoot last SDCC, but that didn't really count.)

I'm going to sacrifice one of my discs, gut it and try running 5mm white EL wire with a single triple-A mini-inverter I found at thatscoolwire.com. Other than that, I have no idea what to do with it. Ah well.

10:45 showing. Meeting earlier at tron sign before movie for pictures. (providing SOMEONE can make it on time considering all her time will now be for wedding arrangements!!!!! ;) ) CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!

Sweet! Plus where is the tron sign?

Yes come to ALA for the weekend and E L Capitan this friday.

Ill be going to ALA with my tron cosplay so let me know where we should meet up, i suggest crashing the disney meet up :p

See you there! Look for MCP, silver samurai, or Shogun Vader
End of line.

Congrats first on you epic news! On christmas eve day I watch some guy propose to his girl at the disney castle. As Obi Shawn suggested, it would be epic to be glowing on your special day, but you're a cosplayer do leia and luke, kidding.

But yeah you don't have to cosplay all day, do the evening and night. Plus this is a really small con you don't have have to buy and do the exhibit hall. Lots of cosplayers just come to take pictures and there are plenty of areas to troll around for photo ops. I

Frag, Anisse, you're the twin sister of Quorra :eek - if you don't win the contest, the world has really gone mad!

the tron sign is on a building several blocks west of la cienega and several blocks east of holloway on sunset blvd. ideal spots for photo ops would be at the sunset village area.

won't be able to make this one since i'll be in vegas for the annual consumer electronics show.

have fun out there!

I just got a strip of el tape in the mail today! Though I don't have the inverter yet... Is there any safe way I could rig some batteries or something up to it?? I really want to see what it looks like all lit up!

EG, that's great work.. very easy flowing in its overall look. I would suggest, if possible, a bit of colour on the arms, perhaps even down to a single or 2-fingered glove item. Just my take on it, but again, good job.

Question for the electronics folks here..

If I were to put this 9v ELTape (http://cgi.ebay.com/1-4M-electroluminescent-tape-strip-9v-EL-wire-inverter-/380303806072?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588bdf8e78) on my 12v ELWire Sound Inverter (http://www.elwirepros.com/ps1039-to-3039-10393039.html), would all I need do is put a resistor on the line leading to the ELTape, thus bringing in the power feed down to 9v from the current 12v of the driver?

So, I have read over a lot of this thread, but I signed up for this specifically (and the fact that I want to start getting into this whole type of thing hahah)
but did anyone think of using eva foam to build the suit part of it? You can use a hot knife used for cutting foam to shape it more. eva foam is very flexible and good to work with.
I myself am going to be using this to attempt to make a suit soon, I just wanted some feedback and maybe to give some other people ideas.

My plan for the suit is to use a morphsuit as the under part - Morphsuits - life is more fun in colour
not using the hood though
then building all the "armor" part of the suit up with eva phone that I have shaped up.

I don't know if this is very practical or if it is a good idea, but just a suggestion maybe.

I just picked up a hotknife, eva foam (floor plates) and heatgun this week to do just this sort of build. It will be my VERY FIRST armor set of any kind, other than real chainmaile, so any input people have on foam armor building.. let me/us know your insights.

OK
so I got a video of my helmet buuuuuut I CANT CONVERT .MTS TO .MPEG or a working file to upload. Goddamnit. I tried looking up these programs to convert but they all have limits (watermark/time) unless I purchase it...

Anyhow I took snapshots.

And posting more photos of Quorra from my blog

rm7ns9.jpg

As you can see, I totally dropped and broke my original mold. So I can't make anymore vacuumform copies. BUT I'm going to make another mold($$$$$). A better one. Since I know how to do it now. And make tons and tons of copies. I got access to an industrial vacuum machine. It's huuuge. HUUUGE. HUUUUGE
Should I add lights to Quorra's helmet?

A lot of messups on my outfit. Going to try to fix it up before my photoshoot.

Anyhow everyone's input from this forum was reaaally helpful. Special thanks to Annisse for going out of her way to answer my nooblet questions!

ALSO //excited

I GOT A RIDE DOWN TO LA cuz my friends are going to ALA (this wednesday-monday 6th-10th)

I'm doing a photoshoot down there. BUt I don't know anything about LA ...
can someone tell me the best places for a Tron shoot?
And how much does it cost to get into Electronica? Is that a separate event or part of disneyland?
And how hard is it to sneak a costume into electronica?

Oh and I need friends. Add me on facebook or something.
