Tron Legacy Costume

I just did another test because I did not like that the foil makes that crinkly noise, I hate to be making that noise while I wear it.
I tried just plain white paper and it reflects the same amount of light, so I am switching to paper instead, maybe poster board since I have some lying around.

You should use white craft foam... soft, flexible, easy to cut, wont make crinkly noises... :)

Incredible!! Excellent pattern work there. Is neoprene that soft foam material usually comes in a dark color (black)? Just wanted to make sure I know what you are talking about. Another forum member here mentioned that they have neoprene at Joann's fabrics.

Thank you.

If its the same thing, the Neoprene at my local Joanns has a fabric outer layer and a soft, 1/4 inch "chair foam" like inner layer. Definately NOT like the neoprene used to make scuba suits.

Well the poster board did the job just fine.
I noticed that poster board worked better because it is a solid flat surface and the foil or tin tape would cave in some thus causing it to not reflect evenly.

Eddie thats brilliant
now the trick is to figure out how to do this one the suit

i hope you dont mind but im gonna use this method of yours till i figure it out ^^

Wow you guys are doing some great things. On a side note those using the reflective tape method I bought some for my sons costume and severly underestimated how much I would need so by more than you think you'll need.

I am here to share the knowledge, feel free to use any of the ideas I am bringing, my hope is that others build on them and make them better.

I already cut out the front torso part and I am seeing how is all going to fit right now.

For those still working with EL Sheet...

I've had to go back to the drawing board a couple of times with the EL sheet. For those of you still working with it, this is an excellent tutorial that introduces you to what it is, and how to work with it:

Videos - Free video downloads and streaming video - CNET TV

A few suggestions:

Pay close attention to the soldering instructions. Soldering is definitely the way to go, however if it isn't set to the right temperature it will burn a hold through the sheet and render it useless.

Epoxy will work, but if you use too much of it, any force on the wires could tear the metallic backing the epoxy is bonded to, and the whole thing will rip out. You have wires, epoxy, and a shiny metallic backing that use to be the contact points to the EL sheet. ;(

What I ended up doing was ordering the copper tape, using that to hold the wires in place, then just put a dab of epoxy on the whole thing so it stays put.

But right now I'm busy testing different ways to wire the EL sheet in the most efficient manner.

Really liking some of the other routes people are going, though.

On the plus side, the 9V inverter has no problem running multiple pieces of EL sheet. As a test, I wanted to make sure I could use these splicing sleeves to run wire in 4 different directions right off of the leads. Picture attached is the result:

Eddie! this is absoultely brilliant! and the exact idea (with the shower curtain) that I was going to do myself to add on to Daniel's EL WIRE work.

Now is that top layer you have, covering the El Wire, the shower curtain? You put the shower curtain on top to diffuse the EL WIRE?

Yes, I also will be doing this to light up my suit! I don't mind using the EL WIRE, still a risk since it is so delicate and thin, but much more flexible for the curved areas than EL Tape would be. I just wanted a way to diffuse the El Wire to look more like the Tape and not just a thin wire.

PERFECT! I am so excited now to light my suit up! (y)cool

Thank you! Okay here is the newest update. I made the template out of transparency paper then I taped the El wire to it, on the other side I taped it with masking tape to diffuse, then I was planing on using the shower curtain material but it was to difficult to keep in place and for it to stay flat so I am just sticking with the masking tape for now until I can come up with something that may work better, it still looks good, just has an off white color but then again so does the actual suit.

Dear Members, For those that are going to do Glow paint. Here are some notes. The paint only works on pourous materials. On the exotic colors like mine(RED). It will look like pink at first & then look like orange. At it's weakest point it will glow off white. After a few hours now, after charging it with a black light it looks pale yellow.Like a faded CLU(Codified Likeness Utility) The paint looks cool, but it has responded very strange. In other words very unperdictable. At least in the RED color. Plus the color itself can only be charged under UV Blacklight. So it's back to the drawing board for me.
I reviewed some notes on the UD replicas presentation at Comic Con in S.D.
They said the lighting only lasted about 5 hours when it was put on. I getting the idea that their prototypes used regular Alkaline or lithium batteries in the power packs. They used alot of power.I could't tell from the videos were it was located or if they were using EL WIRE or EL tape. The videos are not on youtube! But on their current website it states that they are not using any power pack. At least on their current product anyway. So the Glow paint for me is off the table. I'm back to my white shower curtains. And don't bother using the Glow Paint on vinyl.
I'm goint to Wrap the vinyl around the curtain rings after glueing the EL wire.
This way it comes out perfect. I'll be using both sides of the White vinyl. With the EL wire in the middle. Are any of you sewing the Vinyl or gluing it to your outfits? Hey I'm open to new ideas or tips!:unsure

i got the Baton today
its kind of a stupid toy, like the launch isnt that exiting. they should have made it make light cycle sounds and light up
but it does extend.....thats bout it
i may work if you like dont have time to make one for Sam, like i may use it only if i run out of time, otherwise ill be making one

For those who haven't seen it yet. There's also a Purple program & a purple light cycle as well. He appears when Sam has a race of the lightcycles against CLU and his sentry's
I won't give any more of the story away unless you guys ask me about it.

since glow paint is tricky to put on anything i recommend a white acrylic paint base. this will stick to most surfaces and the glow paint will stick to it. i know you are not using glow paint anymore but if anyone else is they should know that it is POSSIBLE

harbinger808- not sure if you got a response to keeping you el-wire to stay put but u could do a few small stitches around key points. just thread it thru and wrap it around a few times then tie off and cut and go to the next spot. \-i think u came up with a great idea by the way. if my silicone version doesnt work im shooting for urs. im just trying to get a decent costume done for halloween.

now that ive finished reading the rest of the threads i like the poster board one and the neopream. every one on here is so flippin creative i love it. Every time i need inspiration i just read the new threads!

i was studying the circuitry of the deluxe identity disc and found a spot that could pause the light pattern depending when it was shortcircuited -but that required creating some sort of timer or a manual switch you would press at a certain time to pause it.

on an easier idea, i created a usb-powered identity disc mod -which requires some soldering and components:
tron deluxe disc modification - a set on Flickr

basically it runs off of a mini usb cable plugged into my netbook. the toy part is still functional. one could potentially add a usb power to their suit on the back and maybe even a cable coming out of their wrist so that the disc *stays* lit while you're holding it. :)

Just went thru your picks on flicker. Well done man. very clean and creative im going to pull mine apart and see what i can come up with as far as keeping it on while im holding it.

Dear Nemesis,
I did use a white base acrylic paint. But the Glow just does not work as promised. This might be good for a kids costume, but for the effect we want, this simply will not do. I'm not sure , but Annisse may have not had any more success than I did.
Advise for those doing the Clu's sentry outfit, The vinyl cutain works out great with the EL wire. I was able to find a bright Red vinyl curtain. I'm using the Red as the top & the EL wire in the middle, and then the white vinyl on the bottom. The effect is fantastic. I haven't cut out my patterns yet. But it looks better than the EL tape. It has the brightness like those in the TRON trailer. As far as what colors are available in the shower curtain vinyl I haven't really looked. But I 'll keep you Guys posted if I spot anything.

I decided to make it flush to the rest of the neoprene, so I had to dig into it, which was a pain, I spent all day getting to look right but I succeeded

It's looking very nice. What are you plans for getting the neoprene armor to adhere to the bodysuit/under armor?
