Tron: Legacy - Clu Robe

When I unscrewed the disc, I pushed it up from underneath with a stick at every little opening. I was so close to removing it without breaking, but it ended up snapping near the end. But I don't need it anyway.

Yeah that is what was happening to me too. I ended up breaking the inner ring right at the end too. I am waiting for my replacement rings from Soulinertia. In the meantime I customized a Sam Flynn deluxe with glow paint and it really glows bright for a few hours at a pop. I sanded down the side with the writing. Painted the disc in the two tone black, and dark dark rough gray color. Painted the inner ring in an orange red color, and the outer ring in a nice white. Filled in the holes where the screws/ covers were.....and whala.....a finished disc.

I went to the Digital Domain site (they did the effects for Tron Legacy) and they had a ton of great videos... Digital Domain: The Making of Tron Legacy

I got a pretty great picture of the back of the cloak, and its very clear where the cape is attached.

Awesome. Thanks. ^^ I kind of thought that's where it was attached based on the way it looked when he walked.

I went out and did some shopping today; got my patterns for the coat, pants, and under jacket as well as fabric for the pants and some ugly blue gingham (think Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz) to practice modifying the coat on. I've attached a photo of the pants fabric. It looks gray, but it's a darkish blue that I'm going to dye black. I'm not sure if I want to make the under jacket out of it as well since it's fairly stretchy or see if I can find something with a more rubbery appearance.

As far as the disc goes, I've been skimming over the deluxe mod threads and my plan was to take a Rinzler disc and swap out the white LEDs inside with yellow ones, but I'm not sure how orange that would make it. I have to find the disc first since the three stores I went to only had the Sam one. The Soulinertia route is another option, though the full kit is a bit more than I'd like to spend; unless I just get the rings and paint the inner one with transparent paint. I'm hoping to wear this to a con in May, so I still have time. This will probably be the last thing I work on anyway.

You can always just paint over the outering and the c ring. I did that and the lights still shine through. Its especially awesome with glow paint :cool

Actually, yes!

Also, It makes me really happy to see people jump in who recently joined, makes me feel like theres a lot of interest in this project, enough to sign up. Just thinking out loud :)

As always, thanks for the continued help

I've been a "voyuer" on here ever since I saw the movie, and I am really excited to see how your robe turns out. Being a noob with no tailoring/sewing/costuming experience, I will most likely have a costume designer make my robe for me and I will add everything else after.

I am just a halloween home haunter that's always looking for something awesome to add to my haunts, and as soon as I saw CLU sitting there in the disk scene, I had to have one for halloween. Imagine this guy sitting inside the door on halloween night handing out candy and chasing kids off with my disk in my hand (and winning a few costume contests too.)

Keep up the good work Darth/everyone, can't wait to see the final products.

PS, what are your plans for the collar/shoulder pads??

Well, I managed to get the inner ring out in one piece by sliding out the open ends rather than trying to lift them up, so I'll try painting them. Deco Art (I think) makes a transparent glass paint that doesn't need to be baked so I'll see how well it adheres to plastic and hides the blue without making it green.

I was planning on using some heat shaped craft foam covered in fabric and then stitch the collar on top of that so it looks like a part of the garment and not like something just stuck on top of it.

Hate to do this, but I haven't found anything in my searches other than 1 large Korean poster. anyone have any good leads on Flynn's black USER outfit and robe? (The one he has on when he storms into the End of Line Club). I'm an older guy and can totally sport the greying beard and hair....but I'm not gonna fit into any TRON style armor any year soon.

I posted this in the general thread as well, but finally have some progress I can post. I'm nearly done with the mock up of the coat, save for the sleeves and the cape which I'm unsure I'm going to pattern out beforehand or not, mostly because I don't have enough of the same type of fabric. It probably couldn't hurt though, and I'm sure I have enough length of something buried in the mountain of excess fabric I have in my closet.

Everything is in "rough draft" stage right now; nothing is hemmed, I'm wearing 4 inch heels so it clears the floor, and there's random markings all over the place, but it's for functionality at this point, not fashion. I wound up using the mens pattern for this and had to adjust the fit less than I thought I would, which is surprising. Once this is done, I'll be able to measure out the amount of el wire I need then watch my wallet cry.

I've gutted my Rinzler disc at least and I'm waiting for my LED strips to arrive. I'm not sure they'll be powerful enough to overwhelm the orange of the center ring so I'm experimenting with casting my own since I have a better chance of seeing a unicorn than finding a Kevin disc. My first pull didn't come out so well since I apparently didn't mix the resin in proper proportions and it's kind of soft. :confused I do have another, cheaper idea I'm going to try before tackling the resin again, so we'll see how that one turns out.

Picture here since I can't attach it to this thread too.

I just purchased a pattern for a priest cassock off ebay. The cassock will need to be modified a bit of course but its a great place to start imo.

I actually used this EXACT same pattern years ago for a Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions-style Neo costume. Seeing it again made me laugh.

At the moment, my plan is to tightly wrap the fabric around some hard-ish surface, cardboard, plastic, etc.
Any updates on these from Anybody? I'm making a Tron jacket for a friend along the same lines and would like to know if you guys found something that worked or didn't

So your reflective tape only shined that bright when hit by the flash from your camera correct, im still kinda skeptical on using it for my costume just cause it would look still in the day since it doesnt really show much.

Regardless if you use reflective tape or EL tape/el wire...it's still not going to work in day light.

Trust me. Just got my EL tape and EL wire from Glowhut.com, and it doesn't glow AT ALL in direct light. You have to be in a shadowed area or decently dimmed area, in order for any kind of light to glow brightly.

Because of this, we're using reflective tape instead. We only ordered 4 feet of 2 different colors of EL Wire, for my boyfriend's program and my Siren...and it won't be enough -_-. In fact, the EL Wire we purchased in order to mod our light discs, is too small in diameter and the white wire barely shines at all...in daylight or in the shade! 8 ft of EL Tape, 4 ft of EL Wire, and 4 inverters was $60! And it doesn't glow brightly at all! And that was with brand new batteries and lithium batteries in the EL Wire!

I R FRUSTRATE!!

Did you get the high brightness el wire? I remember a few people posting that they were having issues with their wire showing up till they purchased that stuff.

I created a pattern for the back of Kevin Flynn's robe if anyone else is interested. I traced this from one of the shots posted here - came from the video game, I think - there aren't any good screen caps from the movie that shows the pattern.

Nobody come up with a pattern for this robe yet?
This is the pattern I used. Granted, I altered the living crap out of it, but it's a decent base. Here's my relatively finished costume. I still have to add the lights on the legs and swap the other lights out to LEDs since the el wire didn't work as well as I had hoped.
