Tron: Legacy - Clu Robe

What do you guys think about a reflective tape/ el wire combo? I really don't to spend like 300$ just wiring up this costume itself and EL wire seems the best to to do that with, but like everyone says EL wire isnt the brightest by itself, but what I was thinking was like a layer of reflective tape, then the EL wire overtop it, and then have both pieces covered with like a frosted vinyl to diffuse the light. y/n? I think I may test this FIRST before i even start working on the costume, but it is going to be like... next thursday before I can order anything

Sounds like your method would work great, but I would definitely test it first, just to make sure you like it. Post pics up here when/if you do pllleeaassee :)

Please don't think this is an easy costume... The only part that makes it "easier" is you do not need a huge equipment set up.

This is a properly tailored garment, it is absolutely beautifully constructed. The secret to cloth costumes is not what you see but what you don't see. There is a lot of work that goes on in the inside. Also I highly recommend following a commercial coat pattern first.

Yes, I know this will be no walk in the park. But for those of us who have a tight budget and no vacu-formers or other fancy equipment, but have plenty of time to plan, shop around and test, the CLU Robe is a much better bet. I've made some props and displays with EL Wire before, and they turned out pretty good.

Just saying that I think this Robe is a good entry point for me to actually build a costume with light FX. I will be consulting with CelticRuins and other people with more costume tailoring experience once I have a base garment to start with.

Exactly. Although the more I think about it, I want to do the full armor, gaaa!! Lets see how this turns out first... BTW what a cool idea! (the dark mark on the roof)

I think Clu's cassock is a great place to start!

Also, if you want to start out with 'light weight' armor, I'd begin with fun foam.

I know, I know...you're probably saying "FUN FOAM??! THAT CRAP FROM MICHEAL'S AND JOANN'S?!?"

Yes. It rules. Well, it rules for certain uses. It's what I use for multiple things. I made my Zelda armor from it (excuse the hugeness of this pic -_-):

I made my Bayonetta guns from it:

I also made Wash's flight harness from 'Serenity', for a friend, from it:

It's pliable and light weight. It can be glued with almost any type of heavy strength glue. It's paintable and sealable, and it can be layered on top of its self with different pieces. The only thing that I don't like about it, is it can wrinkle with heavier wear and tear. So, I wouldn't put too much weight on top of it, or bend it too far.

This was hands down my favorite costume in the entirety of Tron Legacy. The illuminated index finger would be the icing on top, for sure!

CelticRuins is right.... thats what i make all my tron armor out of is craft foam and it looks REALY REALY accurate.

Yea, sorry I forgot to reply to that post, but I really like how it looks, and if I ultimately decide to make the full armor, that'll most likely be my method of choice. Thanks for the tip!

Its a really good start for beginner armor! Especially if you can't afford to make your own vacuum former or afford the equipment for vacuum forming. It's good for those who are apprehensive about sculpting as well. Its a really decent alternative to rubber. And depending on how you seal it, it can definitely look like rubber! For example, the Wash harness above.

Any updates this week?

Actually, yes!

I finally got around to cutting out the piece, using it as a template, tracing 2 new pieces, and sewing them together, a big step in my opinion.

Everyone tell me what you think!

Also, It makes me really happy to see people jump in who recently joined, makes me feel like theres a lot of interest in this project, enough to sign up. Just thinking out loud :)

As always, thanks for the continued help

Any updates this week?

Right now i have some pretty demanding classes that take up a ton of my time (O-Chem anyone?) I still am planning on adding a bunch of LEDs to my rinzler disc soon but the rest of the costume is most likely going to have to wait until spring break.

I definitely will still find time to stay up to date on everyone else's progress though!

Hey everyone. Glad to see I'm not the only one interested in making this costume. The first thought that popped into my head when I saw it was, "I want to make that!" I already have two patterns in mind; one of which I'd have to lengthen and alter the front closure and another I'd have to do a test run to check fit/drape since it's a men's pattern and I'm female. I'll probably wind up using a combination of craft foam and paper mache for the leg armor and paper mache/chipboard for the helmet. My only real concern is the lighting. I considered reflective tape, but I'd really like to do this justice and make it light up. I've never worked with el wire and the like before, so it'll be a challenge, but I've been scouring the general TL costume thread and there's a lot of excellent info in there, so I'm sure I can pick up on a few pointers.

Thanks a lot for all the reference pictures. I found a ton of the suit, but only one or two of the cloak. I'd love to find a good, up close picture of the back so I could see exactly how/where the cape is attached and whether or not it's integrated into the collar. I'll have to keep looking.

Nice to meet you all and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's progress. :)

Good luck! Even though it probably won't be much different, I'd love to see a female version/interpretation. I too am worried about lighting, but I'll hold off on thinking about it until I get the rest done.

I've crossplayed several times, so I'll probably wind up strapping down my chest and putting on one of the short brown wigs I have lying around. I've thought about feminizing it, but like you said, there really wouldn't be much difference. I could wear heels, but they wouldn't really show because of the length of the coat, and that military-esque style makes your chest look smaller even if you don't bind. If anything, I'd probably mod a pair of wedges to look like flats to make myself taller and make my legs look longer. I generally don't like deviating too much since I'm a bit of a stickler for accuracy, and I think people appreciate things more when they can take one look at it and immediately know the character.

Also, yesterday I did some work on the disc.

I bought a Rinzler Toy Disc, removed the outer blade, inner C ring, and all the insides. I painted over all the Orange accents with black (odd that the 4 little lights on inside circle arent lit up, even though the C ring is).

I painted the orange C ring on the back side yellow, even though I never plan on that side being seen.

Once I start lighting up the robe, Ill feed some EL wire into the upper C ring so that it will light up.

How did you remove the inner c ring? When I was trying that thing is logged so tight that without breaking it, I can't remove it.
