Tron: Legacy - Clu Robe

OK, here we go..:love

Ive decided to make the robe that Clu wore during the games, near the beginning of Tron: Legacy. I really wanted to do a Clu costume since he is my favorite character, but his usual armor seemed like quite a task.

Here's a sampling of my reference, basically every type of photo (The others are mostly 1 frame varients of these)

I went out today to buy some fabric and found some great fabric. I think it looks really nice. The only problem is how heavy it is, but Ill just have to suck it up, since it is a cloak and therefore needs to be heavy/weighted.

And yes, those ARE 2 different fabrics. The picture doesnt do it justice, but it really is. One is a bit more reflective than the other, as seen in one of the ref pics above.

Next up is to get this thing layed out, cut, and sewn together!

Please tell me what you think, as I know I've heard of others taking a stab at this; I would love to see how your's are coming along.

If anyone can share any tips, or maybe has a ref picture I might not have, it doesnt hurt to post anyway. :thumbsup

I'll be making one of these, but I plan to work on the body armor suit first, then fit the cloak on top of the armor. I'll post here when I get to the cloak, I'm looking forward to seeing how yours turns out though, good luck

make a note on the unusual design of the sleeves with the el patterns from the actual reference pictures. i think they're a bit tricky but definately can be done. good luck!

I am really interested in making clu's robe also but have no experience with sewing. Do you have a pre-existing pattern that you are using for reference or is the pattern something you made yourself?

If you could share some of your game plan regarding the sewing aspects of the robe it would help me out immensely!

I'm with ya there! :lol I have very little sewing experience as well, But I'm gonna try and get some help, and hopefully learn a lot.

I'll definitely keep you updated with what I actually do, and try to be as helpful as possible. As of now I'm trying to draw out the basic concept, before I make any cuts or stitches

A tip for you: Practice on cheaper fabrics first! Even make a mock-up cape to test your patterns.

I see the two different fabrics. i think the matt areas look quite rigid compared to the fabric with the sheen to it. This might have been to give the structure of the coat.
Good luck on this as i did love the costume in the film!

I just purchased a pattern for a priest cassock off ebay. The cassock will need to be modified a bit of course but its a great place to start imo.

Dude clu's robe is epic. I Want one so bad just to walk around in at home lol!

Although if I were to make one I would most likely make some changes to it.

Planning on doing CLU's Robe as well. I think it will be much easier to get this look than the armor, at least for a beginner like me.

You can get priest cassocks for $70-100 on ebay, but they are thinner material than I think we need to work with. Something more akin to a sheer Trenchcoat, I think. I'm still in the planning-and-saving phase, so please post updates on what works (and doesn't) for you.
