Tron: Elastolite

Ultimatum

So I finally tracked down the name of the lighting material they use in the movie but I have no idea where to buy it. Can anyone help?

There is a thread for the costumes in the costume section apparently it's around 2000 per suit for the stuff

I spoke with Oryon Tech, the makers of Elastolite, yesterday and got into a lengthy discussion about their company. In a couple of phrases, it will be nearly impossible to get some of their material since they deal with manufacturers like Nike, major backpack and safety companies, etc. "Tron was a small and fun project for us" were the exact words used by the man I spoke with. Your best bet is to either buy the products in the future that will have elastolite in them and chop em up to your needs, which is ridiculous or opt for the smarter route and go with products like Light Tape.

Hope this helped.

Idiots, don't they know how awesome that stuff is? They could make a heap of money selling it retail.

Thanks for the info though.

Guess I'll just stick to the EL wire I used in my first Quorra costume, it looks ok but I just wish I could get it 100% accurate.

I think they could but from a business standpoint I wouldn't sell it either to the regular consumer if I could make Million Dollar deals with major corporations. Plus the chances of modding it/making it better and putting a different name on it are quite high since the Elastolite name isn't well known yet. They have "contracts in the works" right now.
Honestly, I think Nike would be the first to use it and jump on the bandwagon pushing "revolutionary" and fashion forward workout clothes. Adidas already has some tennis shoes with the lighting. The man I spoke with pointed me toward one of their other small projects. A fashion designer named Edmund Castillo. They only reason they dealt with him is because his shoes will cost the public $1650!!! Unfortunately, it seems to me that Oryon is all about making money and expanding their company at this point.

I mean, I understand the frustration with not being able to get your costume 100% SA, but why would it be unfortunate that this company is "all about making money and expanding their company?" Isn't that the entire point of being a company in the first place? Sure, they could just do small little projects and sell Elastolite to individuals, but that's a good way to:

A) go out of business or,
B) get your idea stolen by another company that can do it better cheaper - which usually results in A.

Am I crazy? I feel like these guys are totally justified in wanting to control the applications of their invention.

See, this is my point. They end up making a $1650 pair of shoes that light up. I had shoes that glowed when I was a kid. Guess how much they cost.... No more than $30! This stuff isn't new. It's an old idea rehashed as a new one only 5500% more expensive. I highly doubt the fashion/sport companies will really revolutionize new styles even though it's their job. How does that work? :confused

My problem with the shoes is that they only glow when plugged in. You're telling me you couldn't fit a battery pack in that heel?

Here's a similar flexible fabric solution, they might be more approachable.

Crosslink?

YouTube - EL Fabric!

The one thin I've noticed about ELastolite is that it is white when it is turned off too. From what I can gather, the fabric above uses a similar printed ink tech so it may be able to work the same way.

@ Adam: The two points you made were my exact points when I said, "I think they could but from a business standpoint I wouldn't sell it either to the regular consumer if I could make Million Dollar deals with major corporations. Plus the chances of modding it/making it better and putting a different name on it are quite high since the Elastolite name isn't well known yet."
Also, it's unfortunate from the standpoint of not being able to obtain it to make an outfit that much more authentic. Isn't that what we're trying to do here, is replicate props? So it's unfortunate for us, but from a business stand-point it's smart.

@Oni: The Elastolite is a 4-way stretch material which acts like a fabric. In basic terms, it's a fabric that illuminates when an electrical charge is run through it. Pretty revolutionary in my book for safety vests, backcountry/hiking backpacks, motorcycle or cycling clothing...etc... Cops could use these on their vests. Their jackets reflect the light so that you can see the POLICE on the back, why not light it up initially? Very different than the LEDs and lighting components we used to have as kids on our BK Knights...

This seems too crazy to be true, but I think I've found a solution that if I'm reading it correctly would mean we could screen print our own flexible EL material in any pattern.

This company Gwent Electronic Materials Ltd. produces EL inks for screen printing, but they also produce conductive and insulating inks also for screen printing. They have sample kits available.

Their brochure http://www.gwent.org/Data/GemData/D...cent Display/Electroluminescent Brouchure.pdf has a fair amount of detail as does their kit instructions http://www.gwent.org/Data/GemData/D...minescent Display/Instructions for EL Kit.pdf.

Oh yeah, I totally agree. How much do you want to bet that the companies wont use it right until someone who knows what they are doing uses it (which would be someone here :cool ). My point with the shoes is that the same thing was accomplished 20 years ago with older technology and it ran on batteries. The shoes shown here are a step back, not forward. Where are the light-up vests à la Tron? I look forward to the future of this tech, but they are delaying the process unnecessarily.

the product is from Alsa Corp they sent out e-flyers it looks sweet and will able to by in Jan. in spray can......

I couldn't agree with you more.

Sad thing is that within the next 5-10 yrs., it'll go into the mainstream. That's prbly when it's going to get cheaper.
