Perhaps the outer pods/wings rotate around the center cockpit. The outer pods could be like gun pods on a WWIi bomber.

Possible, but no guns are obvious. From what's shown it doesn't look like it's got any more to offer than a TIE Defender except a much larger target profile.

It seems like an Imperial version of a B wing with 3 pods. The lack of panels takes away the TIE look.

Unless they have some way to counteract the outward force. These are fantasy films, not based on accurate physics.

I know, I know. I just thought it was a funny image of them getting mashed against the walls...

I don't want to hear anyone trashing the EU stuff because just about all the TIEs invented for it (Avenger, Defender, Scimitar, etc.) all at least look like they belonged in the universe. This is just crap. It looks like something I would have came up with as a 5 year old. Of course what we got in the Sequels wasn't much of an improvement.

There is something on the top of each pod that appears to rotate. Maybe those are guns.

The outer cockpits rotate around the center cockpit, similar to the b-wing. The wings are more flush behind the two outer ones. Here are some photos:
