Transforming a Batman Begins cowl into a The Dark Knight cowl

WOW....

I appreciate when someone does something, and does it right. This cowl, along with the belt you are currently working on, are absolutely amazing. Will these be available for purchase? If so, do you know when, and a ballpark for how much?

Thanks, not my work on the belt Ken is doing the belt (and doing an incredible job) I've done the Begins and TDK cowl and various other Begins/TDK stuff. And In the Junk Yard right now. ;)

I didn't realize how many subtle changes there were. I only thought the nostril flares were the difference.

You need to take a picture of all 3 cowls together (the 2 begins and this), really make us all jealous ;)

Smiley batman just doesnt do it for me:p... I agree with celtic, a nice hi res pic of them all lined up would be really nice!.. And finished just in time to start the new one:p

Yeah bad pic for sure. ;)
I'll see what we can do if we have time, molds are in two different places so might not happen for awhile.
Oh and the New moive has the same cowl, same suit as TDK as far as we know from all the pics leeking out.

sorry for resurrecting a dead thread, but awesome work. I'm working on making one for little cousin. I hope you don't mind answering (i'll dig through old threads too) but what kind of brand of urethane did you use and where did you buy it? Also, what material did you use for the mold? Any releasing agent needed?

At the moment I'm still sculpting clay on the plaster cast of my cousin's head. I'm still a bit away from the final product. Thanks.

I use Vytaflex 40 slush cast in a silicone mold. But if you're just looking to do one cowl for your cousin I wouldn't really recommend this method. Gets to be expensive. It is cheaper and easier to do the ultracal mold and latex method.

considering it's for a little kid, I want to make it as durable as possible. Is there any way I can make vytaflex work with a plaster mold? I know silicone can get expensive but it seems the urethane rubbers are comparable in price to latex.

Latex would far more durable IMO. Only reason people don't use/like latex over urethane is the shinking factor and the life span. Urethane in the thickness of a cowl is actually weaker than the latex would be and will have far less stretch before it tares/breaks.

what kind of latex are you suggesting? Hot foam latex seems ideal, but honestly this is my first attempt and I don't think I have the set up for it. I'm not sure how well using the stand mixer would work out if I use it for this purpose and the same goes for using the oven we bake food in. Cold foam seems like it'll be doable, but I'm concerned the mask will be a bit too stiff to fit over my cousins head. Slush latex seems like it'll be too flimsy, and wouldn't it degrade rather quickly? I'm new to all this so I don't really know the properties of these materials.

But ideally, say I buy some silicone (like whatever they have for $25 at dickblicks), couldn't I do a brush on type mold (stretch out the silicone as much as possible so I don't have to buy more than one kit), then surround it in plaster and then inject urethane rubber between this mold and the original cast of his head? Would that work?

I'm not concerned about investing a reasonable amount of money into this, so I'm not worried about keeping the costs as low as possible (though of course I don't want to spend money unwisely).

You guys are super awesome, thanks for the quick replies. I honestly appreciate the help and I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome.

wow...just freaking wow, that cowl looks absolutley amazing , seamless work.. very nice , keep up the great work!

how did you manage to slush cast using vytaflex 40? everything i've read says that it has an absurdly long cure time (16 hours or something of the sort)

Hi! I must say that im out of words for how talented you are! Really impressive!

I just ordered a cowl from ebay (200 USD). For me it looks great. I maybe need to use som rubber/latex to fill in some air bubbles to get to your standard.

How du you get yours so neat? I feels like impossible. Do you finnish with rubber spray paint?

Here's a photo of mine. It will arrive within a week or two! By the way, do you sell your cowls as well or is it only for you?

Looks like you bought a recast Nobel, they are all over ebay.

There really is no way to fill bubbles on a urethane cowl and have it work well or stick for long. If there are bubbles we usually sell them as flawed or toss them out, we do not get many at all of those any more.

No we don't paint them the master was finished very precisely and molded with zero flaws makes for a perfect casting. :)

And yes these are indeed for sale Coofunkcurly is haveing a sale on them right now.

Thanks you for the answer. I can't say for sure where the seller got the model from. I will show a picture below and maybe you can see. I guess you're not allowed to link to a e-bay seller here otherwise I would write the direct link. In the ad it does say:

"We are the only sculptors of this mask to be featured repeatedly on G4 Television Attack of the Show"

Im no sculpture expert at all but if I where to fill upp holes with urethane 40 rubber, wouldn't that stick and make the flawed area flat?

How much do you (or the best maker here) sell a new 1st class TDK cowl for approx?

Couldn't open your link by the way!
