Tomb Raider 9 (Reborn) Ice Axe and Walkie IDed

division 6

I was board and remembered someone was working on this costume and decided to do a bit of research.
Looking for ice axes I was able to ID the one used in the upcoming Tomb Raider game.

At first I thought it was similar to a found axe but missing the ring on the back of the neck when looking at the concept and poster art then I looked at a screen cap from the end of the trailer and there it was.

Expensive.
Cheapest I've seen it so far is $199.

The wife wanted to be the new version of Lara Croft for the next Con. Now to make a Con-safe version of the DMM Rebel :D

Re: Tomb Raider 9 Ice Axe IDed

Ice Axe's are EXPENSIVE, wow. I wanted a yellow one like they use in the walking dead game and they're almost $200.

That's interesting.. I've never really noticed games going to that length to make things accurate to real-life items (except things like shooters where the guns have to look like the real deal). But random things like an ice axe or a radio, I wouldn't have expected it.

According to the folks at Crystal Dynamics, many of the items, while not identical have to be based on something so they can be modeled in game. So they usually don't have trademarks and such, but will be very similar

Thought I'd add some more items to the list.

Pouches on the back of Lara's belt.
Note that the square on of the left is also used by Conrad Roth but he has 2 in faded green, Lara's is a faded black.

The GPS markers are based on metal match containers that where originally patented in 1900.

Some nice high res images of the necklace I found the other day captured from the PC version.

If anyone else has some real world finds feel free to add them.

For those that haven't been keeping up on things with TheLadyNerd,
Kristenhenry70, JennCroft and others I'd suggest you take a look.;)

A board member here offers replica axes in her etsy store. I don't have a link handy, but if you poke around the other croft threads, I think it'll pop up.

Here's a larger image of the front of the pendant straight-on from the game model. I'm not sure what's going on with that cog-like pattern behind the magatama part, but it's there in all of Lara's character models from the game.

interesting.

I wonder if they just mixed items together figuring that no one would notice.

I've seen a pic of the island map that is just pieced together from multiple items and repeats several times.

Thanks for posting it.:thumbsup

Wow, that's really interesting! The mirror and the jewel. Huh.

The pendant is so tiny in the game (no more than 3/4") so maybe the mirror representation was put in as some sort of Easter Egg? Why else would the 'official' pendant that came with the strategy guide be missing this backing?

I've been thinking about how to do the pendant, and have come up with 3 options.

1 - hand sculpting out of a modelling material (du-kit/ sculpey/ fimo etc).
2 - Substitute it. In New Zealand, there is a particular carving design done by the indigenous Maori often worn as a pendant known as a 'koru'. Tourist shops sell them here, or you can get a properly carved one from a jeweller. It's typically either carved out of bone or jade (known locally as 'greenstone', or 'pounamu' [poh-nah-moo]) They can come in a range of sizes, and there are some designs which are quite similar to Lara's pendant, though I haven't found a design with notches on the outsides yet.

3 - 3D print it. I've just recently found out about Shapeways, if we could find someone to do a 3D design of the pendant we could all have very precisely shaped and sized replicas. Shapeways can print in an avocado-coloured ceramic, which would be a great colour-match (or the pendant could be printed in high-detailed plastic and then painted by us). There are already scaled versions of Lara's bows and the ice axe on Shapeways, so it's possible that the pendant could be done too (though I think the minimum thickness is 3mm).

Hmmmm.. so other than scale, the one that comes with the strategy guide IS the right shape.. it just seems to be missing that backing. I imagine one who is clever could print that backing out on something sturdy and add it to the pendant without too much trouble.

K.
