TMNT Michelangelo - First Costume Build

So I am new to costume designing. The only other thing that is close to this costume in my history is making an armor costume out of old PBR costumes. But I don't think that counts.

Anyways, first and foremost I want to thank and and give recognition to the users that I've followed on the RPF that gave me all my ideas and who I am going off of to make my costume.

First.
1. Deck Star

Great build with lots of pictures. He is even selling me eyes for my costume. And the mask has a working mouth!

Another great build and lots of pictures. Got alot of good guidance from this.

So this is what I have so far. It is an on going build which I started two weeks ago. My schedule is busy since i work 6-330 and go to school 5-830. Most of this build is happening on the weekends.

I am making a Michelangelo TMNT costume with a working mouth (hopefully), nuchucks, and ooze container.

I am using 1/2" upholstery foam that I am buying at a local supplier for a fairly decent price.

My goal for this peice is to be done by Halloween this year and hopefully win a costume contest. I would also like to accomplish what Deck Star did and get the costume to have a working mouth. Here are the beggening pictures and more will come as I make progress.

The nunchucks. Still need the bands on upper and lower part to be glued down better. I am going to be putting 4 nails around the chuck. Just need to find a good look nailing head.

Lower body so far. Still needs some trimming and some glue fixing. Most of this will be covered up by the chest piece/shell

Arm so far. Will have leather/faux leather strips at wrist, and elbow to hide/cover up seems and skin.

Again bare with me. It is my first build so I am looking foward to your comments and critiques. But dont be to mean :lol

I have a few questions however that I am hoping people can help me with.

1. What paint / latex have people been using for there costumes?

I am going to be covering up the foam with latex paint. Between the first layer and the next few layers I will be laying strips of single ply paper towel down for texture.

Do I need to just buy latex paint from a hardware store. OR do I need to get latex and mix in color?

2. For the upper body I was thinking about making it with a shirt and muscle forms glued to that. However, is there anything better than using a t-shirt/spandex suit?

3. What type of glue are people using for foam based costumes. Mine is working pretty well but some of the foam where the two pieces are meeting stop staying flush so I have a obvious seem. I am going to go back through and try to get them to stay together again btu I was just curious.

Thanks for any help and more progress pictures as they come

Worked on the costume some more. here are a few more progression pictures. I ordered the latex and should be starting with the first few layers shortly.

just a suggestion....pick up an anatomy book from your local library or download some pictures from the internet of how the muscle groups are actually put together on the body, and you will end up with a cleaner build. Not to mention it will be much easier for you to spray the latex over it.
