TMNT don head

Seen a few TMNT builds going on and they look amazing. I started the new style turtles for my kids but wanted old school turtles for myself this halloween. After getting what I consider the worst turtle suit I have ever seen(I'll leave his name out even though he has been kicked from this fourm) I thought I would try my hand at sculpting my own suit. Give me some info on what you think.

Looking good for early in the process.
It's surprising how hard a turtle head can be. You look at it and say, that is a simple shape. But I think that's what makes it hard, simple shapes show flaws.

Just curious, what old school turtle look are you going for. A movie version or something more from the comics.

Keep up the good work! TURTLE POWER hahaa

I'm a big fan of the Original TMNT Film back in the 90's

So if your going for a suit, why not make the eye band in real material..
and sculpt the mouth straight With a small gap, as it will be easy to move it abit after casting in Foam latex for a cheeky smile or show some Teeth ect.

if you have an old school action figure, use that as some shape reference for his head.
when sculpting suits it can be a Different approach to normal sculpting.
also when you use band's for the legs & arms they will all match correctly.

Look forward to watching your Progress. Don was my favourite as a kid..!! :D

here is a bit of an update. I'm thinking of changing the face to a different expression to make it easier for the mouth animatronics. I want to try and stay with the 1st 2nd movie turtles cause I feel those are the best looking.

Lookin better already. I kinda like the idea of a bust to the shoulders like you have it. Would be a cool piece.

So I think you guys are right and the mouth had to be changed so I closed it more and going to put a top row of teeth. Might go with some resin teeth. What ya think?

Ok so i started to sculpt the upper torso and this is one of the pictures I was going off of. Let me know of any changes that needs to be made. the form was off a guy that is 6'2'' 200 pounds. had a big frame to work with off the bat.

hey man this is awsome!!!
i did not know you were going to make the whole suit!!!
i am already interested in this whole project and want a head with the shoulders, pm me or something

thanks to Dericrw I was able to get some nice texture on my Don head. Let me know what you guys think.

Make sure not to mix up your references.
It looks like you are going for TMNT 2 Don.
TMNT Don looks very different than the 2nd.

The 1st Don has squinty eyes, a heavy brow, and a pointing beak.
Don from the 2nd movie has a big lower lip and more expressive eyes.

I am looking forward to seeing your progress.
:)

I really like how the body sculpt is coming along. Very accurate, and I am really impressed.
what kind of clay are you using?

I liked how his mouth looked in your first pictures.
Make sure his bottom lip sticks out farther than the top. (A bit like Bubba from the Forest Gump movie).

I think you have his mouth a little too wide.
Look at the reference and try lining the mouth up with where the eyes are placed.

You are going to mechanize the face? A good neutral/relaxed expression would be the way to go. The slightly open mouth is a good idea.

What do you have in mind for the mechs?
Are you going all out R.C. controlled servos like in the movie?
Moving eyes? Blinking? Mouth movement? Lip articulation?
Sorry for all the questions. I am just excited someone is going to give mechanizing the face a try.
I could learn a lot from your progress.

I plan on doing something similar very soon. It will not be R.C. though. It will be puppeteered by the wearer. Jaw movement will make the mouth open and trigger the nose/upper lip to move back.
The brow will lower and raise with a string pull. Not the most expressive puppet, but it I hope it will impress.

Prob going to be just eyes and mouth moving by servos. Maybe voice activated. Will have to do some playing around with it to get it right I'm sure.
