Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

Hey y'all

glad you dug the El capitan story.

well im no Capn_Jack_Savvy when it comes to giving
you the play by play on a project.

but heres a quick overview on my latest crowning achievement( pun intended)

first off i took about 14 hrs to do all the paisley design in AI
from there the design was laser cut on 2-3 oz leather.

next i made my own top hat block form out of soft foam and made
a mold of that in a more rigid dense foam.

from there i dyed the leather a camo type green with about 4
layers of different shades to give it some depth.
shaped the leather over my block which was abit out of my comfort
zone but pulled it off nicely.
then practiced some darning methods and went for it.

i had roughly the same dimensions as Capn_Jack_Savvy came up with
but went with 10"tall after looking i originally made it 11".

overall im REALLY HAPPY WITH IT.
it took about 3 weeks to finish a looong 3 weeks.
so without further ado
heres some pix in basic order.

I don't even know what to say to that hat.

It is ... perfect. x_x You should be incredibly proud of it. The colour and shape are outstanding...and the embroidery is flawless...The pic of it on the table it looks super tall but maybe it's just the angle/lighting cause the other photos it looks impeccable. Incredibly stunning work. Thank you so much for sharing this too! How do you go about getting leather laser cut? ... not that I have anywhere near the skill or funds to remake a hat even close to yours in quality or accuracy, but inquiring minds want to know. :lol

Jeeze...I can't stop staring at it. :|

Nice striped sock too! And you guys had a FABULOUS group!! Love the card and the pretty cheshire cat too! The table looks like it's devouring you. :lol I guess they wouldn't let you run on it? Booo!

Myself...still procrastinating on dirtying up the coat...eeerrgggh. Why couldn't Trav agree to be the younger long haired hatter with the pretty coat? >_<

Oh, and anyone who's seen the hat...display or screen used...are the edges of the band hemmed or serged?? Hmmm?

as far as the hat on the table thats when it was 11" so i made the executive
decision to cut it to 10" which made all the difference.

the tea party table has a forced perspective look to it thats why its high
at my end.

hey padawan..my coat fabric is a faux leather i got at mood fabric my jacket is lined but i havnt closed it yet incase i get that funny feeling to switch out my red lining for the SA purple/lavender lining.

the laser cut thing was from a company out of TX.
and no it aint cheap, that's why i was soo worried and molding
it over the hat block.

all the best,
ACME

then it must be the same stuff i used
cause it looks just like it (tell me are there stretch-like marks in it that almost make it look like bark??)
as for your hat
Astounding as Always
and seeing how you did it i can sort of understand how it remake mine with a better shape
sneaky hiding slits under the patches like that

and did you do all that stitching by hand
that must have hurt like hell!
and it almost looks like you used an airbrush with either paint or dye
i cant tell
but yeah, those pictures alone help alot
for i shall make a leather hat
just you wait

and as for my costume
I FINISHED MY VEST!! 2 days
that's all
i plan on making a better one with leather
once i get money of course
but this will work for now (the Pattern is a tad big too, i made the small, but ill tailor the next and sell this one)
as always im in my jamjams
SDC12337.jpg

i even got to try one of the stitches on my new machine
i really like that vine down the back, even though no one will see it
i think it works for the character

REALLY nice work on that vest! I think I'm going to have to re-do the lapel on mine...it somehow ended up WAY too small...not that anyone will see it anyways. o_O

Btw, for anyone curious...the lapel doesn't have the gingham squares, but it does have the checkered stitching on it. I'm assuming its simply the opposite side of the top fabric...

Ah, here's the costume hat for anyone on a budget.

Ok so I, Like any other replicator, Have been keeping an eye on Hatter things on Ebay, and it is AMAZING how many people are mimicking the threadbanger vid and trying to sell stuff as "screen accurate."

That **** is jank.

Fangs, we WILL find that fabric!!! It seems we share the same amount of determination ( which is an insane amount ) so I see no way that we can fail. :lol Success will be ours!

In the meantime.....I purchased some gold taffeta that has those pin tucks in the shapes of diamonds. I'm going to use the back side and run some decorative stitching along those lines to at least give the look of the fabric....until I find it.....grrrrr. Not sure what to do about the centre crosses yet though....but I'll figure something out. I figure it's better than not having anything there.....but potentially it could drive me absolutely mad doing all of those diamonds......:cry

Hey padawan...
yup thats the stuff it does have what looks kinda like stretchmarks.

as for the hat..
ya.. i can almost guarantee the original has this same slits
because its really the only way to make the leather stretch
over the block and not have wrinkles.ive been working with leather
for 7 years now shaping it was still abit out of my
comfort zone.
so those patches are out of necessity not decorative choice.
the stitching is half machine and other half by hand.
and yes thimbles help immensely.

To echo everyone else, that hat is fantastic, acme!

I doubt I'll be able to finish my costume for the premiere but I'm shooting for a "close enough" version for now and upgrade the pieces for halloween. I found a great suede fabric for the coat locally. The hat is still kicking my ass though :thumbsdown.

I got my contacts in today, I was worried they were going to be too dark but I'm very happy with them. Very bright and bold. I'm about to start work on the wig, it'll be my first I've one built from the ground up so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

ACME, there are a handful of photos of you and your group scattered about on Deviantart too. :)

Me, I'm in the process of aging our coat....the bottom front left corner is in progress...I have a feeling that by the time I'm done it I, myself, will be older than the coat supposed to look... taking forever! I have the shortest patience ever...maybe I should stick to being the RQ. :lol

Hey Fatal..
sorry for the delay..
your patch is in the mail as of today.
ive just been so busy with this weekend and all.
once again my apologies.

Just a heads up that I hear AMC theatres is planning a boycott as well and others may follow suit.

Everyone is welcome to come join me in Canada where it's going to be shown everywhere! :lol

I'm still working on the aging of the coat. There is fluff everywhere, my hands are covered in glue and...well...actually there's glue everywhere too. I shook the bottle downward to get it to move ( it's REALLY thick...fabric glue. ) and the cap came off and it globbed all over my Pirates throw, desk, pants, hands...I can't say enough times that this costume is actually going to be the cause of my descent into madness...

Oh, and no one answered! What is everyone doing, or how is the edging of the ribbon finished? Serged? Hemmed? Just a single stitched line to prevent fraying?
