Thoughts on the Indiana Jones Streets of Cairo Herbert Johnson 40th Anniversary Hat?

hey guys
I came across this 40th Anniversary Edition of the "Poet" hat on the Herbert Johnson website several months ago, placed and order and just received it.

It came with a fancy box, certificate of authenticity and a "collectors edition" keychain.

The hat overall seem pretty nice, and the interior lining has the Herbert Johnson crest along with the name/address and Indy's initials on the head band. But from the screen used hat I saw at Prop Store the fonts used on that were a Sans Serif font but they chose a serif font for this 40th anniversary edition. Any insight into this? Were there variations on the screen used?

Also, the hat came with what I would call a defect. There's a bulge on the right hand side. I have emailed them about it to see what they can do about this. It's going to be displayed, so would be a shame if it has this strange bump...

I also have a Penman hat, and overall they're pretty similar I would say.

By no means an expert, but I believe the bulge is meant to replicate the look of the hat from the Cairo sequence, one of the most iconic and specific looks the hat ever had. The crown is high and very square, and it sort of mushrooms out a bit from the band. If you don’t like it, though, I’d say go without.

interesting... I have to look that up. But I see in the photos on their site, and the video of someone unboxing that they don't have that "bulge"

So you think that the bulge (see photo) is a feature, not a defect?

If it’s meant to be a “Streets of Cairo” hat, it’s meant to bulge outward from the band right there, I think. Of course, based on your pictures, it hasn’t quite captured the likeness of the hat from the scene, and it’s also possible the pictures on their site are of their standard Indy hat and not their specific Cairo bash. I’m having a bit of a hard time finding a screen grab at the moment to demonstrate, but here’s a picture of Advintage’s Streets of Cairo offering.

interesting. Thanks.
There are so many things to learn, and things I never noticed.

On another note, i like the dirtying with fullers earth. I might give that try myself.

Along with the Initials that I overlooked was the interior of the silk liner.

I had some discussion with them a while ago about getting an exacting replica with the same logo and street address. They have moved around over the years so there's a few addresses out there. They said they could not do a sale on a modern hat with a different address, but could do a restoration with the older silk liner. I tried for a while trying to find a like/similar HJ hat with the correct logo that could be used for a retrofitted restoration. :)

Did you go with a custom sizing or the same Ford hat size?

I see, that makes sense on the address. Still a little odd with the Serif fonts, unless the original had serif and the one i saw from the prop store listing was from a different movie.

I went with a custom size. In case I do want to wear it I thought it would be better to get a nicer fit than one I would swim in. But it's probably going to be display only, so maybe I should have gone original size...

What was the original silk liner? This one is "Champagne" and assume the went as "original" as they could?

A couple of people got it on Club Obi Wan and left some mixed reviews. You can probably find more details in the dedicated HJ thread over at COW.

The images they have of the hat on the site look spot-on, but the photos you have here don't really look the same. From these, it looks like it has the standard modern HJ taper. Great for a TOD hat, not for ROTLA.
