Im new here and fairly new to costume building so tips and input would be much help to me. anyways im working on foam Thor armor from the avengers movie for Halloween,as far as i know there are only a few picture of this armor on the web so it has been a little harder. ive had a few test trials and a few failures.
i am making stencils out of posterboards before i use the foam (any recommendation on what type or thickness foam to use?) i also do plan on makeing the hammer but not the helmet.
im only 5'8 and 150 lbs so i will be a smaller version of Thor but i have been working out trying to get that "superhero body" mostly trying to get my upper body more difined and biger.

Hi CC - I'm also new here and my costume building is very much amateur-hour compared to a lot of these guys, but especially if you're new to this you can't go wrong trying out regular sheet craft foam (sometimes called "foamies" foam) - it's like 1/8" thick closed-cell rubber foam that you can get at craft stores in 12x18" sheets for anywhere from 50 cents to a buck a sheet.

It's easy to cut if your blade or scissors is/are sharp, can be heated up to stretch a bit, and hot glue will hold it together very, very strongly. If you prime it or seal it, it'll also take paint, but it's available in lots of solid colors to begin with.

hello my fellow RPF'ers. i am in need of some advice.... so as you know im makeing this foam armor and right now im using 3mm foam sheets. after looking at 5 different stores i finaly for some eva foam. so i was wondering if you guys think it would be worth it to start over with the eva foam and fix a few mistakes i made with the sheets...

So here is an update, i have finished cutting and glueing the chest piece and have the material im going to use for the cape. i now have to sew the cape, build the forearm and shin pieces, paint, find a hammer, and grow a beard.
here are the pics for the chest piece and cape material.

Sweet build, man! Really inspiring and good motivation to keep me building.

Were you going to attempt the scale mail on the arms or go skins? I'm toying with a process of gluing foam pieces on an old under armor long sleeve compression shirt I had laying around. It's tedious but hopefully it'll give the same effect as the movie prop.

Nice mate, did you use a pep pattern or are you just using the posters and images as reference?

I think your foam work looks very nice, and I'm not seeing any major errors that would necessitate a re-build with EVA. However, you should do what makes you the most happy and confident with your build.

I would however suggest using about twice as much fabric as you have currently for the cape, and adding some pleats at the top. A more voluminous cape would a) look better and b) be a lot more fun to walk around in (trust me)!

Thanks every one for the support and advice! and if any one knows where to get a halfway decent (not too expecive) hammer and if you could help me pronounce it please let me know.

i think that im going to go skin but i was thinking the same thing with the under armor, so i may toy with a few ideas.

im just using a few pictures i have of the suit. and sense im makeing the avengers suit there arent very many pictures out there... cant find a very good one of the gauntlets

haha thanks for the advice, i dont know how to sew so im going to wait on that part for now

They have hammers at Wal Mart...a Nerf foam one and a more costume-ish hammer.
