They don't make replica Reeve Superman suits for kids/babies, so...

haha maybe it's a little of both! He was born just after Christmas last year, ten months old now. He's a fantastic little man and he's loving the fall, so far! Got right into the Halloween spirit.

Awesome costume. You will spend the next 18 + years making Halloween costumes for your kid, now :cool

Thanks! I only hope he'll be into Halloween right through the teenage years, but I won't be surprised if he takes a "too cool for it" break like most kids. Any year he does want a costume though, I'll be very happy to help! :)

Great costume.. I need one of these for my son, Kal-El..

It's (relatively) easy!

  • Buy two white cotton onesies and a pair of white cotton baby tights.
  • Dye one onesie and the tights blue
  • Dye the other onesie red
  • Cut the "briefs" from each onesie, and cut four additional strips from the red onesie. The strips should each be twice as wide as you want the belt loops to be, and twice as long as the belt's width.
  • fold the sides of the strips in to the center, and then fold them in half, so you've got a tab of sorts. Pin these tabs in place as you pin the red onesie briefs to the blue onesie body. When you sew around, these tabs will be loops on the outside of the costume. The belt going through them will cover the seam between the red and blue! Remember to sew inside out.
  • The cape was sewn; I made some folds at the top to give it some draping style. Gave it some pleats and folded the top over. The cape needs two long straps, which will go over the shoulders, under the arms, and attach in the back.
  • The S logos are from the same vector file I made when my Reeve replica costume was being made, scaled down. Kurt (chewbaccadoll) made the appliques and transferred them on for me with his heat press. I can give you these logo files, if you need them!
  • The belt is made from a yellow foam sheet. They sell long ones at Michael's and JoAnn fabrics, if you have any similar shops near you. I bet Wal•Mart or Target could have them too... The buckle's the same material, epoxied on. I may replace that with a sculpey buckle.
  • The "boots" are red socks. They had these at Target - they're great, they were sold rolled down, but are very tall when you unroll them! I'd like to cut the tops to shape and hem them that way.
I'm sure I'll make more of these as Ever grows! I'll let you guys know if I discover any good improvement tips, but this was pretty easy and quick, and delivered some nice results! It's really very similar to my old Reeve suit, but with easy diaper access!

Good luck - your kid will love you for making this!

I've got a couple of onesie's that aren't bad.. I just ordered this one the other day, but have asked for a longer cape:

Going to do some alterations too..

He already lives up to his name

Oh, he's actually named Kal-El??? I love it! He's adorable.

I looked long and hard for a onesie/costume that really was like Supes' uniform. It seems like such a simple thing! The closest one I ever saw was at a WB store 10-15 years ago; they were kind of like thermal pajamas. The one you posted is one of the better ones (who did you ask for a longer cape?), but I can't understand why they need to do red cuffs on the sleeves and a red collar - or why they can't give him his red briefs! It always bugs me when they stroke the chest emblem in black, too. I just wanted a full-on Superman uniform, but smaller. Turned out it was easy enough to make one - and it was much less expensive than any licensed one I found!

:lol She was the one that suggested it.. I've asked the company to provide me with a longer cape, thinking about taking that cape off and the symbol, then dye it all blue.. Find a better symbol, his got little red nappy pants and then buy some red socks.. Then of course add the longer cape.. I've also got to see if the belt section can be removed, if not going to have to figure something out..

Not only is his name Kal-El, he was given my grandfathers name as a middle name, Alexander.. So he also has a bit of Lex in him..:lol

hahah that's awesome!!!!

It sounds like a lot of modification... You should really give the "from scratch" suit a try! The whole suit took maybe a few hours, and that was stitching by hand!

The capes that come with size 4 and 5 pajamas here are decent..and larger than the one you have. We have about 5 pairs of them. :)

My little Superman fan's middle name is Alexander too..I never thought of the 'Lex' thing! :)

Hi Westies. I found this one from when my son was laying down with my dog who was quite sick. I have lots of pics with them and the capes but never from the back. ;)

I believe Wal Mart still has variations of the pajamas. The most recent ones we got were more black than blue, but the cape was the same. It has 2 velcro tabs at the top to stick them to their shoulders. :)
