The Video Game Thread - anything and everything...

This affects all consoles because all controllers are using the same potentiometers. Nintendo joy-sticks also suffer from really bad stick drift and they got a class action suit against them because of it.

Apparently, a good solution is hall's effect sticks which use magnets so last far longer although apparently they also need recalibration and arnt as sensitive. The dreamcast controllers used them and they stil work well apparently. Hopefully console makers work to actually fix this because it is a really annoying problem that ruins the gaming experience.
Yeah, its super annoying, and I am hearing more and more having this issue like you are saying.
Hopefully companies can come up with a better solution in the future.

Yeah. Some people argue that hall's effect is the solution (uses magnets so theoretically no wear and tear) but there are issues with accuracy and the tech being owned by a company iirc.

I think what Sony did with the Duelsense pro was a solution in the right direction (making analog sticks independent modules that are plug and replace) but the modules themselves are quite expensive and ironically harder to get than the controllers themselves.

Sony did make PS5 also easier to take apart and clean compared to the PS4 with the faceshields easy to take off to access the vent to clean so maybe they can do something similar with their controllers. Or go back to buttons only like the SNES lol.

I cant test properly because I cant use my PS2 anymore (no compatible tv) but I swear my PS2 controller also started to suffer from drift near the end so I dont think this is a new phenomenon. Probably more gamers and games becoming longer and requiring functions like pushing down on the stick causing it to get damaged quicker imo.

I finally got around to playing the Mass Effect Legendary edition, ME1. I have to say this will probably be the last I play from the remaster. Everything feels off. I got a FOV slider for it because the camera was on Shepard's shoulder practically, but it changes it for Shepard and the MAKO. So it looks right for Shepard, but it's way behind the MAKO. Not sure why people love it so much. The MAKO drivers and repairs like crap now and won't climb. Disappointing.
They are still releasing half-butted titles. Wow.
Even if the first game got a proper remaster treatment, I would not pay one cent for anything that includes the TURD Mass Effect.

I played through ME1 and really enjoyed it, then got about halfway through 2 and just lost steam. I really hate how they changed things after the first game. Ammo drops that retcon the cool lore, action that feels like it's trying to crib from Gears of War... I dunno. Story continues to amazing but gameplay feels like a move toward homogeneity instead of leaning into what makes Mass Effect cool. Maybe I'll get back to it someday, but for me a replay of 1 was enough.
I played through the original nine times before the 2nd game was released. For the last playthrough, I also bought all the DLCs and even read a couple of books written by the same writer. Awesome stuff.

Then ME2 arrived, and gone were most of the RPG elements that made the first game much more interactive.
The gameplay changes done for ME2 weren't very welcome. Still, the story made it worth playing. But that all changed even before ME3 was released.

With the first Mass Effect the game developers promised this expansive world and story to be explored across multiple games, with the same character. The male/female Shepard you created in ME was supposed to carry through the series, and the decisions you made along the way were meant to have a huge impact on the ending. All BS.

Before they even released ME3, Bioware started killing off characters via their Twitter feed. And if you did not follow Twitter or the official forum then some characters just vanished without explanation.

Storylines from ME2, which were detailed further in books and were intended to be concluded in ME3 were instead dropped completely. Thanks Casey Hudson.
The amazing reveal of Tali's face... ruined. When someone thought it would be a good idea to take a stock photo and slightly alter it in photoshop for 5-10 minutes, and call it a day.

March 2012, after again playing through ME with all the DLCs, ME2 plus all the DLCs I received the game and very excited I uploaded my custom femshep only to be greeted with an error message!
After spending three DAYS on the official forum a few things became clear. Bioware had no intention of fixing the issue. Bioware had no intention of keeping their promise they had made some seven years prior. Make Shepard your own and use it through the whole story to the end.
Instead one had to use their new character creation tool and try to remake the face of your custom Shepard. Which by the way looked totally different in-game.
The stuff of nightmares.

ME: Andromeda is quite horrible. But compared to the ME3 experience, Andromeda is awesome.

Jennifer Hale, the voice actor for Female Shepard - AMAZING.

30 years........and while back then, some stores might have gotten their copies a little early and put them out, and some even late, but from what I could find, October 11th is the official recorded day.
So I put this little picture together (which took quite a long time actually).
And so today, we shall toast to...
-To the Empire.
-To the Returners.
-To our homelands.
Nope.........today its......
-For 30 great years of one of the best games ever!!!!! (right up there with Chrono Trigger)

I'm actually still playing through Metal Gear Solid 5, trying to do everything the game has to do. I should be at 200 hours in by now.
Was playing this one mission where its extreme stealth only, so if you are seen by the enemy, mission failed. Mission I was on, was trying to get a bonus task where you have to follow and listen to these two guys talk, they walk to a new area, talk again, and so on.
Four different conversations. Its subtitled as you listen with the zoomed in mic. Found out, if even one sub title doesn't appear, maybe because you were just too far, or whatever, you missed the task.
Between that, and getting seen, mainly by the best most efficient sniper in gaming history, I must have replayed that stupid mission like 20 times today....or it sure felt like it.

Starship Troopers: Extermination now out on consoles. Not as good as Helldivers II, but still pretty fun.

For me VI is not just peak 2D JRPG, it's the best FF. Dancing Mad >One Winged Angel. Fight me :)

I started the Mass Effect 2 Legendary edition. Am I nuts or in the original did they not show a little submersible go and find Shepard's body, then it went to the thing about the Lazarus Project? In the LE it just starts with them rebuilding him.

My younger brother didn't get the NES til Christmas 1990, so we were late getting into games at the time...but once we did, never have looked back.
Knowing that video games were looked at as a fade and aleady dying by this point, the NES was such a huge game changer.

I think my cousin got his Christmas of 86 and we got ours the following Christmas. I can still remember that Christmas like it was yesterday. Only sad part was watching our Intellivision fade into retirement as our NES library grew.

New Warbond releasing for Helldivers 2, Oct31st and new enemies coming as well.

Just in time for Halloween, Forgive Me Father 2 has launched on Steam. No console release date announced yet.

The Thing Remastered gets a game play trailer. If they fix some of the mechanics from the original this could be as classic as the movie.

For the strategy fans, Metal Slug Tactics finally gets a release date in November.

Goblin Slayer also getting a Tactics game on Switch that releases today. (Actually releasing November 15th now)

With the stick drift issue I was having, it was getting worst.
I got GTA5 for the PS5, and it wouldn't let me use the PS4 controller like MGS5 did, technically being a PS4 game.
So, with my roommate being into his 3rd year learning tec stuff, and having all the tools, we decided to fix it.
Mostly, its opening it all up and cleaning these tiny little metal things.
1000022028.jpg

He took it apart, I cleaned it all out.
Amazing how much hair and dust can get inside.
Putting it back together, one little clip got caught and broke off, but in the end, is working alright and no sign of the drift, so the clip isn't thankfully a bad issue.
I read that any place to do the same could charge anywhere from $50 to $100.
So at least I saved the money.
Now hopefully it stays fixed.
