The Star Trek question thread

Plenty of scenes in Next Gen where the shield is a bubble around the ship, but in movies, shields let some of the damage through.
This is where we get into the problem of technological evolution. Back in the day, until a simple mislabeling led to something propagating down through fandom... On the TOS Enterprise, Gene, in the writers' bible, was very clear the ship had two related but distinct defense systems: Shields and deflectors. Shields are a layer of energy around the ship, like, as you say, a nonphysical extra hull layer. Deflectors are the active beams that push small objects out of the ship's path. "Deflectors" and "deflector beams" were synonymous. There were no "deflector shields". I remember deflector screens at one point, and need to run that down.

We see in TWOK, TFF, and TUC that shields are conformal. And, further, in "Encounter At Farpoint", Worf, as Deputy Tactical Officer (under Tasha) reposts, "Shields and deflectors up, sir". On the original ship, the shield generators were built into the hull. The deflectors were emitted from the three boxlike structures flanking the main sensor dish. That carried forward to the TMP refit. The guys at ILM asked about hull structures to make sure nothing was left off, and they included the refit-style deflector emitters on the Reliant -- two built into the saucer, one on the torpedo pod. It is only lacking the big long-range sensor dish. The Excelsior, too, has deflector emitters in the neck, a main sensor dish, and its forward torpedo tubes are in the "gunwale" off to the sides, at the top of the secondary hull.

Starting with the Ambassador class, the big dish is a combined unit, carried forward with the Galaxy class. The dish now generates nested passive deflector screens that repel microparticles, as well as the active beams. The passive shields also act as a first line of defense/early-warning system for anything coming in. In "The Outrageous Okona", when Worf reports the Oronaran ship is locking lasers on them, Picard comments that lasers "won't even penetrate our navigational shields". Those are also the layer of shields being referred to when they "extend shields" to surround another object or ship. They wouldn't stand up to a real attack, but can dissuade casual hostility.

Also, in the series, they can't damage the miniature too badly because they don't have the time to make replacement panels or the like -- never mind the use of stock footage.

How do Bajoran names work? In DS9 they go from calling her Kira to the 7th season where her friends call her Nerys.
Bajoran names are last (family) name first, first (personal) name last. Her name is Kira Nerys, but calling her Kira is like calling her by last name. Same when she was addressed as Major and later Colonel Kira. When everyone got closer and more friendly they called her Nerys.

Well, that's the tricky thing. In TOS, the Eugenics Wars (plural, like the Clone Wars -- makes me wonder) weren't said to have included direct genetic modification. Eugenics has been the selective breeding of people to produce desired results. Khan and his followers, to seize power in the 1990s, would have had to have been born in the 1960s, and likely been third or fourth generation results of a breeding program that started when eugenics became faddish in the early twentieth century.

It wasn't until TWOK that them being "engineered" worked its way in, and subsequent shows ran with that.

One of the many reasons Star Trek's timeline split from ours no later than the 1860s (and probably earlier). No one dedicated enough to eugenics in our universe set up a breeding program somewhere in Central Asia -- at least, not so far as anyone's intelligence services have found.

Maybe that's where Covid came from. That lab in Wuhan, China was really working on a eugenics program but came up with the Covid instead. :p

Ok finally finished binge watching DS9. No stations around here, at least in the last 20 years, ever run DS9 so this is probably only the first time I've watched it since it originally aired. So a couple questions. How do Starfleet people pay for things on DS9 or other planets that require currency? Do they get a stipend or something? The other is the scene after Cardassia is liberated where Sisko, Admiral Ross, and Gen. Martok are drinking a toast to their victory. Sisko and Ross both say it's not something they want to toast and dump out their blood wine. Wouldn't that be a massive insult to Martok? It seemed excessively rude for Sisko when he could have just set his mug down instead of raising it and dumping it right in front of Martok.

Yeah, that's a "drink not with thine enemies" thing for them, per season-1 TNG. Pouring it back into the barrel would be okay. Refusing the mug would be understandable. But what was shown was an established insult.
