Well holy bantha crap my friends. It feels like it has been WAY too long since I updated this thread. Not sure where the time has gone or what I have been doing, but things in this project are moving forward and I really wanted to share what we have going on.

When last we left you there was progress on what we call the "South Wall" or "Poster Wall." Well, since then I actually migrated over to the one section that has had me the most stressed. The one area that I was certain beyond all certainty that I would absolutely ruin and decide to stop the project and replace the entire basement with shelves full of beanie babies!! . . . thankfully, that did not end up being the case.

Ok, so, the bench. Yep, our Millennium Falcon Inspired "Crash Couch" "Bench" whatever you would like to call it. That's the project I have been avoiding.

I am sure many of you have seen the incredible work "Tea" did with his Bench Build, as it was a huge inspiration for us on ours. If you have not seen that thread you owe it to yourself to have a look! Finished - 1:1 Millenium Falcon Bench Build

So for our build we have a much smaller bench area, and the construction of the frame actually goes back almost 4 years (yeah I know, I am so slow with this project.). That said, we decided a full EVA foam construction was the way to go. I used a combination of both cheap floor mats as well as thicker foam for the seat itself from TNT cosplay.

And cutting a whole lotta pads!!!!!

We were able to find great "Pad Plans" from the Dejarik Tables Builder Group on Facebook, and then we modified those plans to fit our smaller bench. In several spots we had to adjust the plans and even create new pad designs to fit our bench. All of which was fine with me as this build is not intended to be the Millennium Falcon, but our own Corellian Freighter Design.

We used contact cement for all the attachments of the pads, and I used a heat gun on the thick large seat pads to help form them into place. This worked like a champ! I can tell you that things are holding up incredibly well, and that I am super happy with the feel of the pads. They are actually pretty comfortable to sit on as well. Much like a restaurant booth or bench.

Now, i will say that I am a bit disappointed in the rough cut outs I did for the bench greeblies. I was intending it to look worn and rough, but instead it turned out a little amateur in spots. It could be worked on a bit, and I could repaint, but I'm not sure how much it actually bothers me. We'll have to see.

As far as the bench greeblies, i designed those with parts I had and then made molds of them so I could duplicate throughout the bench. Worked pretty well!

If you want to see our episode that covers the bench pad build and the greeblies we made for the bench you can see all of that here!

This episode shows the installation and the painting.

So after all of that nonsense we ended up here . . .

The next phase was to design and build all the "Control Boxes" i wanted above the bench. Now in the movie these are angled, however in my space they need to be vertical because of what I plan to do above the control boxes. (And no, it had nothing to do with me being terrified to figure out all the geometry involved in making the angles work together . . . not at all ;)

I used my Glowforge laser cutter in combination with Adobe Illustrator to design and cut all the panels.

And just incase you were wondering . . . yep, we have a build episode of all of this too!

You still with me? Ok, cool!!

We then moved on to the outside "skin" of the bench if you will. I needed to build panels for both sides of the bench so we could start bringing this all together. Pretty straight forward stuff here; 1/4" MDF, greeblies, and paint!

and of course . . . you guessed it . . . another build video!

With all of that done, it was now time, it was time to try and bring this whole bench to life, and that meant LEDs and lots of them!!!

And that pretty much catches you up. Brings us to where we are today, and here is what that looks like!

Now, to say I still have a long way to go would be an understatement. But this last stretch has really energized me in a way I have not been in a long time. The project is massive, and the amount of detail I want can make it overwhelming. But the bench looks pretty good, and I am very happy. I can't wait to show you whats next!!!

Oh, and incase you were wondering . . . Yeah, there is a build video for this last part as well ;). Thanks all for having a look!

Absolutely wonderful, your post made my day. I know you see a lot of areas you'd like to work/enhance/improve but to my eyes you have hit it on the nose.

Okay, I'll say it. You're my hero!!! Sing whatever song you want, in your head, when you read that... it's true.
I've been missing your videos, man. But talk about making up for lost time. Oh my Lord  (y)
