The Slayer of All That Breathes... Squirrel Girl!

My friends and I decided to do a Marvel group, and since one of them was doing Deadpool, I couldn't resist doing Squirrel Girl. That, and she's awesome, and I thought it'd be a fun costume. And it very much is so.

"You evil, evil man!" - Kicking Deadpool's butt

The costume wasn't really intended to be done until Dragon*Con, but my friends already had theirs done so I put it together pretty quickly. The leotard was kind of a pain, because the fabric is only 2-way stretch and I had to adjust the pattern quite a bit to get it to fit. The tail was of course the biggest hassle. The top is held up with a harness, and currently the base is attached with velcro and snaps - which doesn't work especially well, so I'm trying to figure out a better way to attach it (any ideas?). I may also get a lighter wig, as I think this one seems a bit too dark.

Didn't get many photos at the con, so we did a mini photoshoot in my backyard this past weekend.

More photos on my Flickr and deviantArt.

Ha! That is awesome! Great job! Now how the heck did you get a squirrel to sit in your hand and on your shoulder?

haha, thanks! He's pretty realistic-looking, isn't he?

I actually sewed a magnet to the bottom of him and another under the leotard strap, so he'd stay on better. I need to add another one to the other shoulder.

That's cool. Hilarious and cool.

You have a great squirrel prop, now all you need is a Cage baby doll and you will be perfection.

That is great. As for the tail, could you use Neodymium magnets? Four or five in the tail and then a matching set on the back of the costume.

Something like these:

Amazon.com: 30 Neodymium Magnets 1/4 x 1/16 inch Disc N48: Kitchen & Dining

I think you'd still have to have the tail attached on the upper part, but judging by my experience with these, your biggest problem would be getting the tail off.

I think a flexible magnet would be better, but I have yet to find one that does much more than stick to a refrigerator.

I did consider using magnets, but haven't tried it yet. Currently the upper part of the tail is held up by a harness that goes around my abdomen and arms - which works, but it's difficult to get on and off. The bottom is the more bothersome part, though, because it continuously detaches. I did buy some bigger snaps to try, though I'm not banking on those working.

Long as you don't plan to take any pictures with people with pace-makers, you should be fine with the magnets!

Haha very cool! And very well done! This is a character I'm largely unfamiliar with. Will have to do some research! Great job!

I had to laugh out loud. If I were to not have known the squirrel was fake this would be a horrifying response to the question "Now how the heck did you get a squirrel to sit in your hand and on your shoulder?"

So I think I can finally consider this costume 100% done!

Several months ago, my boyfriend had the idea to use pager belt clips to "clip in" the tail. I tore apart some clips I found at Goodwill, attached one to the harness, the other to the butt of the leotard, then sewed two pockets on the tail, which the clips slide into.

You can kind of see what I'm talking about here:

The harness has been modified since this photo. The black webbing with clip was replaced with a wide band of elastic which I slide over my head, the brown straps were replaced with clear bra straps which are detachable, so I can undo them from the front, slide the straps through some loops I sewed into the insides of the leotard straps (so they don't peek out), and then clip them back in. It's still a bit unwieldy to get on and off but it is soooo much better than before. The tail definitely stays put now!

Other than that, I made a new belt with a more accurate belt buckle and added snaps into the pouches, and I made a removable bow for Tippy Toe.

Here's a photo I really like from DragonCon, taken by Judy Stephens:

And here I am kicking Thanos's butt:
