I'm doingthese for a prop exhibit at the prison out in Mansfield (40 minutes away from the front door) and am in need of opinions and feedback on the final images before printing.

Please excuse the bit o' backwards in the thread, as I was able to find all the images and crop them and alter them before I was able to screencap, so you'll see the finals before you see the work. Also, please excuse all the edits.

I was able to find all the images during a rainy day, and played with them while watching the film, and finding various markers for cropping each image to make each poster. Enjoy below, and if anyone would like a copy of the image for printing one for yourself, please PM me! Thanks!

any help locating marilyn or rita is appreciated.

Re: Shawshank posters-what's out there?

Wellllll . .I had planned to hop outdoors today and get some work done, but the rain kept me inside and working on the posters. Tracked each image down, and altered them with simple Photoshop techniques.

Rita's cropped , and the brightness and contrast are brought up so it appears more like the in-movie poster.

Marilyn is from a full screen cap/photo with Art Litner, and is not only cropped, but swiveled to the right so that the lines of the building behind her line up with the edge of the poster.

The image was clear enough that we can read the address on the door behind her as in the film posters.
I also dropped the contrast a bit so it was darker.

Still working on Raquel. Having trouble finding a high enough res image. I'll keep working on it.

Here's the smaller, lo-res images (so noone can grab them) but I'll post better ones in the paper prop forum. If anyone wants full sized, holler. i'll be printing some for myself, so if anyone wants a set, let me know.

Re: Shawshank posters- TWO down, one to go.

Well, shoulda waited on my post. Took one more swipe looking for it before giving up.
I cropped this one, and altered the color for a more sixties look.

This one needs more work though. It starts getting jpegy at about 50%.

Here's the small version.

Enjoy!!

Re: "Heard you're the kinda man that can get things?" Shawshank posters WIP

I'm kinda working backward on this, but I wanted to go back and show a bit of work on how this all came together. While working on the images posted, I wasn't able to get screencaps (I use the camera and the T, due to a older OS that needs replaced), so I just kinda knocked it out and got it done.

I'd also like some feedback on how thes should 'look'
before I print the posters for the prison's exhibit.

While the images I've sourced are nice and sharp, the more I look at the film, I wonder if these should be more fuzzy, as if they were blown up and printed during the approprate decade. I'm also wondering if I should leave them at 24x36, or go with the pre 1980's measurements that Great Gallina dug up while doing his research in the other thread (thanks for that GG!!).

So let's start with Rita.
Here's the source image, reduced in size and resolution for posting.
The odd sepia tone is not something I've seen before, but I'm told it was common back in the day **shrugs** maybe someone could shed light on that for us.

Using the film and my trusty pause button, I was able to use the picture frame behind Rita as my main tool for cropping her just right. We're also lucky enough to get a shot of where the top is cropped. While we don't see the poster in it's entirety, I am satisified with how she looks in the final pic, hoping the cropping "math" works out .

I notived this curious burn line on the top of the poster, and wonder if it should be replicated?
I am also having trouble choosing to really wash out the detail from my image to make it look more like the film used prop, or leave it at it's current sharper status.

I'd appreciate feedback on that.:)

Now let's move onto Marilyn. The source image is a large photo from a online shrine. Based on it's size, I'd like to think it may be a lobby card or print from the press kit. Either way, it's a great shot, and makes a great image to create the poster.

Note the buildings behind here are in perspective, and crooked differently from the 90 degree angle along the edges of the film poster.

I love the nice draw down we get in the film, so almost the whole poster is seen. We get all four sides to make the correct crop, and even get several 'markers' like the address on the door on the left side, and the straight edge of the building on the right. We also get perfect looks at where her head and feet are cropped. A little free transform 'tipping' and the image is where it needs to be in the final.

This is another case of should the final image be a washed out as the film poster.

Wow, you did some great research on this HS. This was an awesome read and I am following your progress closely.

What a great thread!

Raquel was actually the hardest, as there are ALOT of versions of this picture. Also, if you're bored, search Raquel Welch pinup, and enjoy. She was such a stunner in the day! Ouch!!

Besides not finding a decent resolution image, I was also having trouble getting one with the correct sky and mountains in the rear. On two occasions, I found the right sky, but wrong ground, vice-versa, or they were too closely cropped, or they were in black and white.
It was a bear, but I found this nice one that has a little different color, but a decent resolution.

As mentioned before, Great Gallina had found measurements for a standard poster size pre-1980. This pic fits that size near perfect (27x41), but it's edges don't fit what we see in the screen version.

What also stinks, is we only get a corner and the top of the film poster to draw our conclusions from for a final. So all the work is a guess. Feel free to offer suggestions on where she should be. It's been strecthed a bit in free trasnform to meet the 24x36.

Even worse, is the colors are way off from the film poster, and need to either be darkened, contrasted, or completely changed. I haven't done much with them expect bring up the blue and yellows. I'm even more clueless about what to do with this one before final printing. Again, feedback is appreciated.

Re: The Shawshank Redemption, Andy's posters WIP, advice and opinions needed

Thanks GG! Do you think the finals are okay, or should they be altered further to look more screen appropriate?

Re: "Heard you're the kinda man that can get things?" Shawshank posters WIP

Well that second pic you posted of Raquel certainly is the sharpest I have seen. Yes, the color of that one is off, but I think you can def. work with it by shifting hue and contrast

This is what I came up with after a very basic shift (I decreased the amount of red and cyan in the pic while increasing the percentage of blue):

What do you mean by finals HS? As far as what people like, I am not sure I am qualified to answer, but in my little experience being here I have noticed most people like their items as close to the way it appeared in the film (i.e. that burn at the top, the way the image is washed out, the grain, the cropping, the size etc).

Re: The Shawshank Redemption, Andy's posters WIP, advice and opinions needed

Hmm, I like that, I'll mess around with mine.

By 'finals' I mean the three that are 'done' above in the early posts. Those are smaller versions at less resolution in case someone gets Copy/Paste happy. But they do represent a ready for print version, but again, I'm concerned by they're final look.

I should also note I'm working on Warden Norton's embroidered safe cover too.

Gotcha! Arguably, it's hard to know exactly what these images would look like after being blown up so substantially, but the first pic of Rita may need to be washed out a bit like you said, and I would def. tweak the color of the Raquel pic a bit.

Re: The Shawshank Redemption, Andy's posters WIP, advice and opinions needed

Well done on all your research, Hotshot. They've shaped up nicely.

Please keep us posted if you do create an interest thread on the posters and any safe cover. :cool

Re: The Shawshank Redemption, Andy's posters WIP, advice and opinions needed

Thanks Chief! Think they need anymore work?

Re: The Shawshank Redemption, Andy's posters WIP, advice and opinions needed

Is the larger version of the Raquel poster you chose as sharp as that second pic that was the wrong color? I wasn't very clear before, but it almost looks like that second pic is sharper than the one you are working with. It MIGHT be better to use that second pic if you can tweak the color.

Re: The Shawshank Redemption, Andy's posters WIP, advice and opinions needed

They're the same pic. The odd colored one is the soure image. I adjusted the colors from that. I'm tweaking it further, and am doing okay, but not htere yet.

Re: The Shawshank Redemption, Andy's posters WIP, advice and opinions needed

Better, more color matched Raquel and a tweaked Rita, with deeper blascks and some more luminous highlights. What do you think?

Is it just me or is Raquel just a TOUCH too blue?
