The SFS stormtrooper helmet replica, new and improved.

Hey, thread resurrected.
I want to share my latest pics of the second SFS mini helmet I painted and finished with scratchbuilt mic tips, "real" lenses, chin strap an foam padding.
I sold the first one I painted but decided I really needed one myself. I had this standing around unpainted way too long now and took the spraycan and brush to it a couple weeks ago.

I can't wait for the 1/6th scale SFS helmets. I'm already scratching my head over how to paint tube stripes on THAT one...

Only 1 current question to ObiHahn. Which was easier to paint on the 3rd scale - the raised or the indented tube stripes? Considering indented on the sixth scale.

The raised ones, left side looking at it.
In the indented ones, the paint wants to run along funny ways where it's not supposed to go, so those turned out a bit fatter than planned.

Although they are a great guideline, I was actually thinking of sanding and filling the tube stripes flat and then paint them on like you would on a full scale helmet.

I also tried making stickers in a close-enough shade of blue, but they look out of scale due to material thickness and the way the edges won't lay flat against the surface... so paint it was.

So: raised on both sides would be easier to paint, at least according to my findings.

Cool. Appreciate the feedback. Due to the lumpy texture there, I was thinking the recessed would work better - of course, they would be deeper than on the 3rd scale helmet and I can ask the printing company to go with the tube stripes' inside edge instead of outside when making the alteration. Similar to how it was done on the Gentle Giant bust helmet.

But with raised, people are able to sand them down smooth - it's just that in that scale it will be really difficult to do unless you have jewellery files or something similar and small. I could of course ask them to raise the stripes and then smooth out the top surface of them, so there's less work for people.

I think that for the sixth scale helmet from that scan, raised would be the "lesser evil" when trying to paint along them.
Then again, 1/6 is sooo small that it might even be necessary to get rid of the stripes altogether for that scale.
It was very tricky painting them in 1/3 already, but that might just have been me.

I guess only a 1/6 test shot or two will give a clearer answer?

Yeah, well, there aren't any money available to do tests and I was thinking with the recessed, then people could just fill them in, which is easier than sanding in that scale. I appreciate the feedback, but I think I'll go with recessed as it will present less issues.

Well, if you fill them in, you need to sand anyways, no? I still feel painting raised details is more ideal due to capillary factors and all that.
But sure, if you feel recessed is the way to go, give that a try.

Looking forward to how the 1/6th scale SFS helmets will turn out! :)
