The Saint <> Simon Templar's Knife

Re: The Saint ---------------------------- Simon Templar's Knife

So how does that work since parts of the handle are Black? If we bought the metal version would we just have to go back and paint the Black on or can you order it that way from Shapeways?

Painting WILL be required. One way or another. At best, I'm a 3D designer. I am an amateur at painting.

The right hand object is the Rhodium plated from Shapeways. It has a shiny chrome looking finish.
A case in this material would be around $330. (without blade)
The left hand object is White Bronze. It has a more matte finish and is not perfectly silver. It has a
slightly off-silver color. Very subtle but is a mostly silver appearance. It would be cheaper, maybe in
the $200 range. It would be a custom cast from someone other than Shapeways.

I like the Rhodium plated for the finish. I just wanted to show you what options I was considering and
which one I chose.

Re: The Saint ---------------------------- Simon Templar's Knife

Looking great! I'm liking the Rhodium as well, just looks a little closer to what's seen on screen.

Re: The Saint ---------------------------- Simon Templar's Knife

There is a standard type of locking mechanism that is found on most pocket knives. From the pictures, I can definitely tell that the prop knife does NOT have this type of lock. With Shapeways, I couldn't really duplicate it anyway. The hinges and blade are really only suited to display use only.

This is (1) case in normal plastic. (2) in Frosted Ultra Detail. (3) blade in Rhodium plated.

I'm really happy with the blade. As you can see, it has a mirror finish. (evil image? :devil )

I don't have the funds right now to do the case in the Rhodium, but it should be equally impressive.

I'll be playing with painting the case to see what I can come up with.

Looks great! That Blade is gorgeous!!!

Very impressive!

I hade some small charms made with the comedy and tragedy faces from the Saint Knife. It will fit in the indent on the knife.

Any photos of the prop knives? I always thought that little shield was an etched piece.

You can tell from the glossy reflection of light that this is a raised acrylic piece in the screen shot.
And in the prop knife, you can see where the acrylic piece has been removed and lost.

The acrylic piece was removable to get to the screw. But that's how it got lost. ;)

lock picks pic.jpg

If I add the lock picks, would anyone be interested ?
They would be on a swivel hinge, but would not stick straight out the back like the screenshot seems to show.

It'll be out the back at a slight angle and the case won't close while it's out. But still, how cool are lock picks in a knife ?

I think getting a real screen accurate one is probably outside but current budget, but I'm sure enjoying the process!

Re: The Saint ---------------------------- Simon Templar's Knife

Thanks. I want as much functionality as I can get.

There will be 2 versions. One with a Rhodium case and blade, and one with an acrylic case and rhodium blade.

Re: The Saint ---------------------------- Simon Templar's Knife

It's been a bit since I watched the sequence about the use of the lock pics / flat tools, but I think he had to remove the one he wanted to use, and stick it in the end of the handle. That might make your job a little easier. Also on the end with the 4 circles, there is definitely a shaft to stick in a round object (like the phillips screwdriver in the first picture of the inside). Your prototypes are looking excellent!

Making it removable is more complicated than putting it as a hinge. But I can see the sheath is silver and the lock pick is black. I can see it swivel. I can not see how it swivels and then detaches. :(

I'll try some detach options tomorrow.

Because of the thicknesses I'm dealing with, and the Shapeways requirements, I'm not sure I can do the screwdriver. Where the four circles are is also where the circle hinge for the knife blade is on the other side of the wall. If I try to cut too deep into the metal to make more room for a screwdriver, it could mess up the hinge for the blade. In some versions of the knife (such as blow torch knife) the blade is a dummy piece and doesn't even open. I would suspect the picture of the open knife showing the lock picks and screw driver also has a non functional blade.

I left a partial indentation where a screw driver looks like it COULD go. That might be the best I can do.

On another note, I got my label for the lettering / lcd screen. Once I get a knife painted, I'll try out the label.

This is the "polished white plastic" that has been painted. Even polished, it has too rough a surface to give a consistent paint job. Unless someone specially requests it, I will not offer it in this material. The frosted ultra detail will give a smoother print, so that'll be the minimum material I offer.

This is awesome. First great build and second I didn't even know that there was a newer The Saint movie made. I always listened to the radio show. I gotta watch this movie now.
I can't wait to see this finished.

Thanks. This is very complex to 3D model. The blade is on a hinge. The two halves of the knife case are on a hinge. And the lock picks are all on individual hinges and have to be removable as well.

Re: The Saint ---------------------------- Simon Templar's Knife

that's excellent. as for working on the blade itself etc, if you are still tweaking.... go on youtube and check out this guy named JOHN GRIMSMO. he builds knives and has some pretty good videos on the inner workings although you will have to search through his many videos... try weeks around 33 or 35. watch the whole Knife-making Tuesdays series if you have some time.

also I've printed a bunch of stuff with I-materialize. they have a transparent resin that they clearcoat and its very smooth... probably the same stuff as Shapeways. the GREY is also pretty good and pretty cheap for prototypes.
