The PEPAKURA question thread - PLEASE READ RULES IN FIRST POST!

The THICKEST cardstock your printer can handle. I bought an Epson Stylus T13 recently because it can handle the thickest cardstock(180grams) amongst all the other printer in the same price range. Those which can print thicker than 180 grams would cost 2 to3 times the amount.

I usually glue big pieces of the patterns onto 360 gram cardstock to make them more rigid so that the assembled piece would maintain its shape. I leave small patterns and patterns that need to be bent a lot untouched so that they're easier to work with.

Hope that helps.

so the thickest i can use, makes sense :)
thanks for the info

I'd amend that by saying you should use the thickest stock that's appropriate to the piece you're working on. Smaller pieces with lots of folds will generally be easier to work with using lighter stock, while larger pieces certainly benefit from heavier stuff. There's a little bit of a learning curve involved, but once you get a feel for it, it's pretty much second nature. :)

So................... need advice.
Do you "designers" think its possible to modify this file by smoothing out the EAR and the EDGE that seperate the front and back of the head?
Ive highlighted those areas in orange.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Trying to smooth it out as much as possible.
If its not "doable" please let me know so I can stop trying.
If you think you could do this........... please feel free to help me out.
Been attempting to get this project going for a couple weeks now.
Im looking for it to be 300mm in height.
Thankyou so much for any help.
For the lip on the top of the head, if it is too tiny to fold/glue, just omit that piece and make your own lip using layers of scrap. As for smoothing the ear, do you mean the 3d mesh? I modeled the ear in as high detail as would work in pepakura. I can go back and see, but I think that it is blocky in the references that I used.

OK, it's my turn for a question. I modeled an "accurate" mouse droid body minus circuitboards and greebles. (the quotes are because the measurements/angles were based on screenshots...possibly by someone here :p ) The problem I am having, is that the droid is larger than it appears (more breadbox size rather than toaster), so should I stick with the normal A4/Letter unfold, or should I prepare it for large format printing?

Hi DungObeetle........ thanks for answering.
First off, let me thank you for your work in this hobby.
Im a new member, but have been doing masks and costumes for awhile.
Ive recently gotten into the pepakura and you seem to offer so much help to this community.

As for my requests of your Dr.Doom.
I was hoping to find a way to eliminate the lip along the head altogether.
So as to have a "smooth" finsh.
Also, to eliminate the ear, so again to have a smooth surface.
I was hoping to use this to create a Destro mask, and figured i would add ears after the fiberglassing is done.
Ive been using fiberglass for many years and know its much easier to add things like ears and such after the intitial shape is constructed.
It seems to first create these items out of paper is overkill for what Im trying to achieve.
Without the head-lip and the ears, the construction should be alittle more simple for my Destro project.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for your time.
Robert

hey Dung0beetle this is what your pep file looks like so far.

does anyone know if there is a Commander Cody Pep File? I am debating on either Commander Bly or Commander Cody as my long term build

I found it but i dont know know how to download it.
File:Cody.jpg - Pepakura File Wiki

Looks like the pep file has been removed and only the jpeg remains.

Hopefully someone here who has downloaded this before will share their files with you.

I have that pep file saved but before I share it I'd need the permission of the person who modelled and pepped it as it looks like a lot of the Star Wars stuff has been removed from the wiki and I don't know why.

It's not that I don't want to share it it's that I don't want to upset the person who made it as it's really good work, could LunarLord (I believe I know who that is) or NintendoDude/Vagabond (original modeller) give me a nod and allow this model to be shared again please?

That would be awesome if they share it, I am trying to decide whether to build cody or Bly, I already have Commander Bly's pep.

First, the commander cody helmet was edited by Matrixskull and originated from the Clonetrooper TFU mesh. The new version of the helmet can be found here http://www.imprime-recorta-pega.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3937

Now, as many know the star wars pepakura file wiki is down, but many links are still up. Here are most of the files and more that were on the wiki. SW_Costume_Files_1.0.rar - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download

Hope this helps.

sweet, Thanks Fierfek, what set of armor goes with the Commander Bly build?

when should i worry about the gaps in the card/joint between edges in regards to when i start to apply the resin to the outside, cause i'l got some little gaps but dont really know what does and doesn't matter.

if it needs be near enough completely sealed what can i plug all the little holes with? :confused

I like to pour copious amount of resin into my pep and slush them around so I make sure there're no holes to cause a mess of things.

I simply plug them by hotgluing bits of cardstock on the inside while putting the part to a lamp to identify where the holes/gaps are.

i'l give that a go, thanks :)

If someone feels like doing a cool anime pep I have a perfect one in mind :D
Uchiha Madara in Naruto has such an awesome mask in the latest chapters of the naruto manga.
Seem like my phone is too stupid to understand posting pics so, if anyone's up for this lil' task let me know and I'll provide some pics.

I'm currently working on my first project (yes it's changed multiple times lol) which is a Halo ODST helm. This is my first time working with Pep and i have a few questions.

For scaling i went with this tutorial - How to Scale Your Armour- Tutorial V.2

I'm hoping i've done it right, but i can't help but think it's going to be to small. My question is,does it look small on paper usually ?

Probably once you start building it and putting it together it will probably take shape and size but i'm a little unsure at the moment about it.

I have a question about weapons.

I would like to make the Halo Sniper rifle. With weapons do you just print them as is or do you scale weapons as well ?

Thanks in advance :)

2D Menu; Change Scale; Scale Factor

Whatever number is currently there is the default scale value. Increasing that number increases the size, and visa versa.

The dimensional size can be found in the bottom right corner of the window given as HxWxL and is usually in millimeters.

If you take the scale value and the current size dimensions you should be able to do a little math and calculate what value you need to get a specific dimension. Or just use trial and error.

One tip, remember that changing the scale changes all dimensions. You can't increase the width without increasing the height and length as well. When most people try to increase the size they tend to increase too much.

Few people get the scaling right on the first try, just fyi

I'm working on Dung0Beetle's Y-wing helmet and would like to change the sizing. I have the current version of the viewer but cannot find the 2D Menu as listed above. I see the size dimensions in the lower right corner, but see no way to change them.

What am I missing?

Thanks

You are missing Pepakura Designer. Only in designer can you resize models.
