I was thinking of making one of these as a joke gift for a friend... Kind of like the way Jim gives it to Dwight... I guess its a metal detector of some kind with custom stickers.. Anyone know what kind of detector this is?

Plywood or even stock lumber would make it pretty reasonable. Make sure the lights work! It would be great to have some kind of "secret switch". By default the lights could go to hetro...hit the switch and they go the other way! :eek
