Gone but not forgotten.
Greetings RPFer's,

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, just not been feeling it.

Firstly, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy new year and hope everyone had a groovy Christmas.

I've been really struggling the last few months since i finished the MK1, lost my mojo BIG time, I've been very depressed about this and really have been thinking hard and trying to decide what to do next but nothing was coming to me.
I had a few false starts on my Tamiya 1/12th Williams FW14B, I'm currentlyhalf way through the engine/rear end assembly, I guess its OK but I tend to put so much pressure on myself to get it right I get so stressed out and don't enjoy myself, I know about the completion not perfection thing, but it's just not that fun for me to building OOB I think.

Soooo, I decided that the only way around this was to go with my own design and scratch build something original again. ;D
I'm a big F1 fan so i thought about building an F1 like ship from about the same time period as The Nylon Gag MK1.
I found this concept ship on google and decided to use it as my inspiration

Not sure if i'm going to stay with Ferrari but we shall see.
Did a very basic sketch, so basic i'm ashamed to show you, but it was just to get the idea in my head, in intend to build this a little bit FREE STYLE BABY.
So, tonight was my first night at the bench and here's what we got.

This Tropicana fruit juice lid caught my eye and i thought it would make a perfect thruster nozzle
Picture%2520001.jpg

Made a hole in the center.

Picture%2520003.jpg

Found the internals on these pill bottle lids interesting so i popped out the middle and cleaned them up.
Picture%2520004.jpg

I think these are from some kind of baby product, my cousin gave them to me.
Popped a hole in the middle also.
Picture%2520005.jpg

Found these interestingly shaped raw plugs
Picture%2520006.jpg

Cut the top and bottom off these miniature brandy bottles.

Picture%2520008.jpg

And of course my old faithful mouthwash bottle cap, I still need to put a hole in it but i also want to put lights in the engines so i'm waiting until i can sort those out before i do.

Picture%2520010.jpg

Everything lined up nice.
Picture%2520016.jpg

And obviously this is just roughly assembled but you get the idea. This will be the insides of the engine with a fairing and lots of other details added.

Picture%2520019.jpg

Picture%2520021.jpg

Nothing is glued yet, it just feels so good to be back at the bench.

Have no idea what's next but I'm sure it will come to me.

Stay tuned,
Take care.

Awesome! New project from you, a new vehicle in the works from Katsu-san, now all we need is for theDoctor to start a new build, and we'll have a trifecta.

Hmm.. Am i in time for a front row seat?
Drinks and popcorn are at the ready.. :)

And take your time.. No pressure at all. Just have FUN building it..

Awww yisss it's like christmas again what with both you and Katsu-san beginning a new project. welcome back man :)

Hey gag I have had those tropicana tops in my hands a
few times and thought awesome design on these! LOL Good
to see you back at it! This is right up your alley love that
concept pic here in the thread awesome.......can't wait to
see you bring this to life!

Hi, Tony! Welcome back! Happy New Year!

Looking forward to this build :)

Glad to hear you are, too.

Are you thinking of building this around a (heavily modified) F1 body or are you going to go completely from scratch?

Depending on how big this is going to be, a model A-10 Warthog may be a useful starting point: http://www.revell.com/product-images/85-5521-lg.jpg

Will any of your internals be visible once the model is finished?

-MJ

Hey Mikey

Thats a good question, i was debating that but i think there will be some covers in the main body to see the engine but not so you can see the engine internals.
The only way would be by looking into the sidepod intakes i plan to put in either side of the main body, the whole idea is still pretty flimzy in my mind so we will see what happens, don't forget it's FREESTYLE baby.

What do you think, have you got any ideas?

Well, if you wanted more work to do, you could make one or both of the side pod cowlings removable, to show off the engine internals. I remember what your Mark I engines looked like, and how much of them was hidden by the nacelle and cowlings... This might also transition smoothly into a pit stop diorama, if you were so inclined.

I was just drilling out the center of a toothpaste cap for a thruster nozzle last night and it reminded me of this thread. Looking really good.

Good Evening Chumlies,

Thanks for all the support, great to have you along for the ride.

Gunna make this fast because tonight I'm not drunk enough ;D and i want to be,

Sooooooooo,

8 hours of bench time today and a few evenings during the week and here's what we got so far,

Prep'd some pieces to hold the engine vanes

Picture%2520051.jpg

Added some tube to add interest

Picture%2520053.jpg

Picture%2520054.jpg

More small part prep,

Picture%2520055.jpg

Was given two of these by my buddy G at work,

Picture%2520056.jpg

Wanted them mainly for the switch,

Picture%2520057.jpg

But after I had dismantled them I found that this....

Picture%2520058.jpg

Fit perfectly in here,

Picture%2520059.jpg

Glued some clear domes over the holes in the back

Picture%2520060.jpg

Then i moved on to the afterburner injectors which I cut to length,

Picture%2520061.jpg

Drilled a small hole for the actuator rods for the vector mechanism,

Picture%2520063.jpg

Cut the bits for the actuator assemblies,

Picture%2520064.jpg

Made the main drive unit,

Picture%2520067.jpg

Used ship turrets with a hole drilled in them and some wire for the control unit

Picture%2520070.jpg

Then everything was dry fit, later it will be cut to length and installed,

Picture%2520075.jpg

Wrapped one of the main body tubes to overlap a join,

Picture%2520076.jpg

Picture%2520077.jpg

Slotted and trimmed the vane supports and cut some more details,

Picture%2520078.jpg

Picture%2520079.jpg

These were then assembled,

Picture%2520082.jpg

Picture%2520081.jpg

This is the outer profile so far, a little different, a bit shorter than before because I think this is going to be about 1/12th scale so it would of been to large relative to the pilot, I don't want the ship to be to big, I want it at least a little relatable to current Formula 1 cars, scale wise

Picture%2520083.jpg

That's about it so far, I've ordered some more rod and other assorted styrene, my lights for the engines and some Alclad chrome and Magnesium paints which should arrive this week, I hope.

Well, I'm going to get a refill now and watch the first episode of the new season of Face Off.

Stay tuned my friends and thanks for stopping by,

Take care,

Gagsterman
