I really love the props from these movies and i was lucky enough to score one of the rare resin copies of the mini-key from the second movie. A very limited number was offered a while ago by a fellow board member who owns an original.
I talked to him and asked him if i could make metal copies, as this prop would be even more cooler when it has the weight of metal and a correct brass necklace added to it.
Recently i finished the prototype for a limited run i will be doing in the future and all i can say i am really happy with all aspects of how it turned out.
I recently started working with pewter and i decided to see if i could cast good copies. Making the mold was a challenge as there is little room for a good sprue, so some good thought had to be put into the mold. The pewter castings came out really nice and don't even need to be spuncast to capture all the detail.
After cleaning the casting up i brassplated it for 2 hours (taking it out and cleaning it every 15 minutes) to get a good thick plating on it. Then i just polished it with some cloth.
The chain was totally custom made and is exactly like the one in the movie. It is made up of a series of brass rings, soldered together in pairs. These are then connected to eachother with rings that are a tad smaller. The rings were spun and cut by myself, something i hadn't done since my chainmail making days. I had forgotten how cutting about 300 rings can give you a big fat blister in the palm of your hand, which was really OUCH!!!
Apparently they left the chain shiny in the movie, so i didn't chemically weather it.
All in all, i am extremely happy with the result and the weight of this thing is awesome These will be offered in time, i will update this thread when that time has come
Here is some pics i took after i cast and cleaned a copy in pewter:
Here are some shots of the finished brassplated prototype. I KNOW i have made a couple of people here really, really happy (waves to Alexey )
