The Mummy Hamunaptra key 3.3

Still working on this. Changing from an external peg on the flaps to a hole to put a rod through is having me rework that part of the design, and not just the lock.

What I like about you is you keep us updated. Some of these sellers go months without an update. And many just peter out and never finish what they start. So I appreciate you keepin' us in the loop as to what's going on. :)

You're welcome. :)

I've made a number of changes, including making the overall design smaller than the original. Changing the overall size affects other things, sometimes not till you print it and see what has changed. My original design was that size because I was printing it at Shapeways online store, and they had minimum wall thicknesses and minimum detail size. My design at that time had to be a little larger than 1:1.

The V3.1 will be 1:1 and I've even ordered a special resin from overseas. I had leaned toward my FDM printer because you could buy a metallic bronze/gold filament. But now I've found a brass/bronze resin that might give the metallic look I want without painting. That would be very cool if that resin performs like I hope it will. Fingers crossed.

Are you referring to Dragon Resin by chance?

So I have, both the dark/aged bronze and the silver. Really thick resin, the warmer the temp in the room the better so it will thin out. Shake the heck out of it before you put it in the vat to really get the pigment mixed. Print everything super slow, I went with twice as long as they recommend and what info. I found online. Supports on everything or the weight of the loose resin will pull it from the bed, and lastly ENSURE that your orientation is so that whatever face you want the "metal" to show is always up. Any vertical print wall/sections will not show up as metal, only the flat or slightly angled models. And yes, it stinks to high heaven, you do not want to be in the immediate area during printing.

That sounds fairly difficult to work with, I'll be intrigued to see how it turns out. My gut says normal resin and a reasonable finishing process might be a better way to go, but metallic finishes are always tricky to get right.

It's hard to tell from someone's pictures on the internet, but what I see is a matte dull bronze with some shinier brass-ish color in grooves and crevices. The PLA for my FDM is a brand new shiny looking metallic color, but this bronze RESIN will not only look metal, but be an ancient weathered looking metal. That is my hope, anyway. If you look at the H-key from the movie, it is not brand new looking. I found a quick screen shot off of Google images.

Jintosh, I can grab some pics this afternoon of the printed bronze and silver pieces I've done if you would like to see what it could/would look like? Maybe give you an idea?

Don't know if these pics help for the paint, they're supposedly of an original key

That (if real) is the STUNT key, notice that there are no hinges. It was used in some scenes where the key needed to be open to fit and open the book. It was not intended for close ups, as being able to tell that it has no hinges would be a dead giveaway that it's not the same key as previous scenes. So, there could be colorization difference with the openable HERO key. (could be, and likely are) The stunt key was a single piece of cold cast bronze, and the Hero key, so far as I know, was not cold cast bronze.

Oh okay, I hadn't noticed the lack of hinges but I had seen it didn't have any flap with the rounded end like you see in the movie, I just thought they would try to keep the colors the same between the different models, but I guess like you say the colorization could be different. (the site says the one in the pictures is "cold cast metalized resin expertly studio painted to resemble ancient cast bronze", so maybe not the hero one you're thinking of)

hmm....any time you you see "cold cast" it means putting metal powder into the resin, and in this case the powder would likely be brass or bronze....so we're actually in agreement....they are just describing it slightly different. The stunt key is cold cast brass or cold cast bronze. And added painting after that.

A considerable amount of metal dust in the resin can make it brittle. The Hero key has the moving hinges which are very delicate. In short, the Hero is unlikely to be cold cast, and would be made of something else. If the Hero key is already metal, then painting it like metal would be redundant. The Hero key is likely metal. (but I'd love more information, or to be corrected!! :) )

So you can see from the pics., it depends on the light and the angle as to the metal look that you get w/ Dragon Resin. These are just snapped in my shop with me moving around the organizer box the parts are stored in. You can see some distortion in the larger Model 47 side pieces, from the support not being sturdy enough and the weight of the resin actually "bowing" out the thinner sections as it flows out during the raining/lowering of the build plate. The smaller plate and slide top were printed flat and had pretty thick walls so no distortion and a pretty nice metal finish.

I hate waiting for it to arrive. But it looks like cool resin.

If there is still availability, I would also be interested in purchasing when these become available. Beautiful work so far and I appreciate seeing all the updates with your design process!
