The most unfortunate prop I've ever had to build

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share with you what I just finished. But first I have to explain what and why it is.

There was a great guy who was involved in the fan communities in Minneapolis. His name was Robert (Roadkill the Troll) Aiken.

Bob liked a good project, a good barbeque, a good stogie, a good convention, a good game, and most of all, sharing all that stuff with good friends.

Bob was a big guy. His favorite T-shirt said, "I may not be smart, but I can lift heavy things." And he did. But the shirt was misleading. He was a very smart guy. A "rules lawyer" for all of you who game.

Unfortunately Bob was taken out of this world by an unusually aggressive brain tumor a little over a week ago. It wasn't too much a surprise... after diagnosis he started getting his affairs in order. At which time he asked me to create his urn for him (he would be cremated).

He requested that it be as colorful as I could make it. Opalescent if possible. It would feature what he called "Screaming Peacock Eels" on the outside. My wife drew up several design options and he picked one.

So here it is. Cut from custom-cast resin blanks and finished with opalescent art ink under a urethane automotive clear coat. My wife sculpted the eels from Apoxy-sculpt and I did the paint job. My co-worker Mike F. was very helpful in cutting the body on the lathe.

This is the most honorable, yet unfortunate prop I've ever had to build.

I figured Bob would have wanted to have his very own "show off thread" to showcase his final resting space. Thanks for looking fellas.

Wow. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, but you've done him proud! That's an amazing looking urn, like something that would be found in an ancient Indian burial. Very cool.

First, my sympathies. Second, I can see no better way for you to have honored your friend. The love and care put into the urn is obvious.

Beautiful work without a doubt and sorry to hear about your friend, I'm sure he'd of been blown away by the final result.

Sympathies for the loss to all who knew him. That said, a beutiful piece of work.Very well done.

Thanks guys,

At the end of the memorial service/wake, it was humorous to see this colorful urn in a tin carrying tub along with a stuffed Tigger and a stuffed Stitch from their trip to Disney World. Someone remarked "Ruba dub dub, three critters in a tub!" Roadie would'a laughed.

After he was diagnosed, the local community (gamers, fans, etc.) came together and gathered enough money (along with matching funds from The Source comics & games... his second home!) to send Roadkill and his wife on one, last super vacation to Disney World where they spent their honeymoon 18 years ago. They had the "top of the line" for the entire fortnight including a personal visit from Tigger. And we were all extremely happy that we could give them that... it quite literally was the least we should do.

You are fortunate to have had a friend like that, Gordon. I think you've done a wonderful job on the urn.

:thumbsup

The urn was really amazing. I've seen Gordon's work in person quite a few times before, and this was terrific. I wish I'd gotten to know Roadkill better; but looking at all the pics at the wake jogged a lot of memories. "Oh, yeah, the zoot suit. Oh, yeah, those tusks and horns. And there's The Swamp thing. And oh, yeah!...." I didn't know him very well, and I think I'm worse off for not knowing him better.

Gordon,

That's a lovely piece of work you've done there... and a really touching story.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your friend...

Tom

Sorry to hear about your friend. Fantastic results on the urn. He'd be proud.

What words could possibly be a credit to this thread. You have a good heart, my friend. Did you finish the urn before he finished his course, so that he saw it?

Well done!

A man can only aspire to have friendships as good as yours, very sorry for your loss. Beautiful way to honor your friend.
