This has probably been discussed before, but since I'm relatively new here, I'm just curious as to what the background is for the two black and white images that are used consistently as the basis for replicating the ANH OBI lightsaber. To me, it seems that the hilt is in much worse shape in those pictures, than in any of the captured images from the film :confused .

Also, for the benefit of some of the new folks, what is meant by and the difference between a "hero" and a "stunt" prop?

Thanks,

ATL

Those black and white pics are reference photos from Lucasfilm shot post-production (hence the heavy wear on the prop).
Studios shoot photos like these for their own reference to document the props, maintain continuity, and provide reference to licensees. Back during ANH they didn't shoot very many for the small budget film, but for the prequels they shot thousands of photos like this.

A Hero prop is made to be seen in closeups. The Hero Luke ROTJ is a good example: It's the version built specifically for the one closeup shot while other versions like the V2 are used far more often in ROTJ.

A stunt prop is for stunts - solid resin, static props thrown around on set, sabers used for dueling, lightweight resin guns for holsters, etc.
