The Martian Space Suit

Are there any completed/ready 3D files of all the armor?

What's the etiquette for this?

Any info would be great.

I'm one of the newbies here but will contribute any way I can. =]

Several members have taken a stab at the armor but no one has completed any, let alone an accurate set. Captain April is knocking everything out of the park. I'd just wait until he's done. I plan on doing a run once the files are complete, finished and molded. Probably early 2016.

Sweet, will keep a look out. Thanks, WBE!

Love following this thread.

Everyone ready for the film? =]

I´m busy for a couple of days and this site explodes with reference and creativity. Love it!

Great photos ACalamity Thanks for getting those. PM me with a paypal account if you want a $5 :)
(I said I would give a tiny contribution towards expenses if anyone went and got great photos. And then you did :) )

Amazon gives me links to combat belts now,. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LEV86BO?psc=1 this one is getting very close.

I was planning on attempting a foam/pepakura build of the armour and helmet,. I just have to sit down a weekend with enough reference to 3d model and testbuild. Think it might be a january thing..
And currently trying to build a vacuform machine (I bought Fon Davies Stan Winston School tutorial.) Planning on getting some acrylic to test on before I build a bigger version. I don´t know I´m doing :)

I´m hoping to see the movie this weekend,. I know someone who saw it yesterday, who I got hooked on the book :)

It seems as the circuit pattern is glued a step below the other pattern and the seam covered by the black tube, I doubt it's a different fabric because it still behaves as neoprene but this definitely makes things more complicated than I originally thought.

Edit:
And I have to add that this step-down only seems to be present at the circuitry pattern. The other patterns are either connected with a sewn seam, just glued without the patterns sewn, sewn with glued rubber tube over it, and the tube actually sewn over the seam line.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you glue a neoprene suit together at the seams of all the so called "panels" that makes up the suit.

The webbing used for holding up the belt seems to be some sort of safety or fastening type of herringbone webbing going from 1 3/4" (45mm) to 1" (25mm).

The same type of 1" webbing is used for making the Molle on the belt. If the battle-belt is not custom then at least the molle part definitely is.

Edit:
It just annoys the heck out of me that I can't find that same type of webbing. I'm thinking I might need to contact some company making these webbings.

I keep wanting to try sculpting the armor, but I have never actually done it before and keep getting distracted by just studying other parts of the suit. And trying to find the other parts.

The belt is a really tough one. It has to exist out there somewhere. They went through a lot of work to modify the harness to it. If it were custom built I think it would fit the harness better. While those amazon belts seem to have the general idea, the big problem I see with them is the lack of the (for lack of a better word) pockets. It has one continuous area for the webbing to go through, whereas the one from the suit has one on either side, and is open along the back. I have been looking through websites for tactical stores in the UK online but nothing right yet. That grey is just a hard fine. Unfortunately I am also leaning towards whatever it is being out of production now, and really having an online presence. I am not that great at the research, but still trying.

Agreed, those are pretty great. Itll be good reference for any other iterations, custom or otherwise.

These look great. Should I still try to contact a custom maker, or will these be fine?
I think it is probably still worth talking. Those are not quite right for the screen used ones. Both in color and in size. I have the stitching of original patch at 45mm and the whole thing being about 48mm. So the keychain needs to be a few mm larger, and brass. Plus technically less detailed. They are a great reference though.

I'm in a similar situation, I'm currently trying to complete my list of buckles so I can use the Nautic Cobra from Austrialpin as a reference to the neoprene suit. Thanks to member Floggy I got most of them down but I'm finding some to be incorrect. I'm also trying my best to study how the suits panels are arranged, what type of inks and such are on them, and how they were assembled. which isn't easy. Then I got to run this through the workshop that's gonna make my suit and get an estimate.

I'm almost certain it's a custom belt since it's using the same webbing.

As a side note, I'm counting 114 (Spanner/snake-eye) security screws used. Size not confirmed yet, I'd need those darn Nautic Cobra buckles :p

And I'm off to see the movie tomorrow! Can't wait!!!!

Got in contact with FBFX, the team making the suits and they told me they're following this thread and that they unfortunately couldn't release the 3D files due to FOX Studios owning the rights to them, which is a shame. But I'm liking Captain April's dedication and I'm confident his replica model is gonna satisfy me and many others.

Just saw the movie and loved it! Couldn't stop staring at the space suit.

I have to admit, the RPF never lets me down. Awesome research everyone, started from page 1 of the thread! Love seeing the evolution. I need to get my hands on a coolshirt!

Soulinertia again leading the charge, love it dude. Your Star-Lord gear is top notch bro.

Can't wait to get started on this build. Aiming for Dragon*Con 2016. Hopefully we can build some small equipment and set up a team EVA in the Marriott!

Welcome aboard, Kevin. DragonCon is happening for sure.

Same. Never done it before either, but I've been watching a lot of videos on all the most popular methods and while I'm watching I'm like "Hey, I could probably do that!" and then 5 minutes later I'm like "Hmm, I don't know."

The webbing on the left is definitely the same, they added that to hide that the harness has been cut in half. I am not sure the webbing on the rest of the belt is the same though. I know its kind of a thin premise, but the thread on the molle part is definitely a different color. Meaning they were sown at different times, with different patterns. The quality of construction on the belt and the harness are way higher than the couple bits holding them together. Making it seem much more like two found items sewn together than one found and one custom. I do accept that the webbing is very similar, and the molle part could have been added, but still leaning towards it being all out there somewhere.

Also, is this the remains of a tag? It could just be fuzz from something else, but it looks like they cut off a tag and left a bit of it.

I also have 114 for the count of spanner screws. Though the ones on the nautic plates look more rounded than the ones on the armor. They may be different. Once we get the sizing right, I will look into ordering them from a manufacturer. As well as the ones on the suit. If we bulk order them I think we can get them cheap.
28 per boot x2 (56)
4 per knee x2 (8)
8 per shoulder x2 (16)
4 per elbow x2 (8)
3 on red valve
3 on blue valve
3 on per nautic plate x3 (9)
5 on diverter valve
3 on each hole for cooling hoses x2 (6)

I am still trying to decide if a lot of those brass plates were found items or if they were custom etched. They seem to be pretty random for custom parts, but I also can't find them with some simple google searches.

I have not been to DragonCon yet. I have definitely been thinking about it. But if everyone is going to be there, then that will be my aim as well. A team EVA would but freaking amazing.

Yeah I have that as well. I start sketching it out, and then start to doubt it again, and end up getting distracted searching for other parts instead.
